Question about 2000 Dodge Neon

1 Answer

Tranny pull The tranny in my neon died on me and the car wont move. Im going to have it rebuilt but am having trouble getting it out. Whats the easiest way to do it? through the hood or from under the car? also might it be cheaper to rebuild at home and if so is there some sort of guide to it?

It is much easier to take out the sub frame and remove the tranny from underneath the car. Be sure to support the engine from the top with a strap or chain. I would not reccomend trying the rebuild yourself.

RUN it could be a bad tranny

Or have it checked by a pro tranny mechanic just in case it is only a sensor issue, i see a lot of neons with this problem.

2002 neon tranny faiure??

I had the same problem driving along and had to coast over to the side of the road. 92000km. all the clutches in the tranny were gone and all kinds of filings in filter and pan. the tranny had to be rebuilt at dealer for $1895 canadian Sorry for this news I also thought it slipped into neutral and wouldn't move no matter where I put the shifter

My 2001 BUICK CENTURY TRANNY STOPS WORKIN AFTER 3 MIN.

Might want to remove the pan and look how much debris is in there. they can draw debris into the filter for like 15 minutes until it just wont let any more fluid go by then trans will neutralize. when you let it sit the debris by gravity falls back to the bottom of the pan. If this is the case changing fluid and filter may be a temporary fix but honesly when theres that much debris in there it needs rebuilt--in fact sometimes after fluid and filter change they wont move at all. The thick fluid and dirt provides some pressure. Hope I helped. Thanks

Replace the tranny

The engine and tranny need to be removed as a unit. You can pull it or you can drop the sub frame with engine and tranny attached.
If your doing it in your home garage and don't have a lift, pull the engine and tranny out, take the hood off to make room.

The job is not incredibly difficult the wiring harness will probably give you the most trouble, LABEL IT!!! and snap a picture or two so you can remember its routing. i would recommend you get a manual for the car and follow its directions, or take pictures as you work so you don't end up with extra parts.

As for where to get a transmission, the dealership of course of you want to pay way to much for it, most parts stores can order transmissions in either rebuilt or new and they have warranties so just call around to the part stores. And then again there is always the junk yard if you want to take a chance.
