Question about 2001 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

1 Answer

I own a 2001 monte carlo that has started to intermittently lose a voltage signal to the voltage guage. This cuases the security system light to come on as well as lock up the radio features. I have checked the charging system and the battery as well as the ground connections and junction block connections which all seem to be in good shape. Do you have any idea what the problem could be?

Take apart the dash. Jiggle the connector while the car is running (be careful, only 12-14 DC volts, won't kill you but you'll get a shock) and see if it goes in and out.

On my 03 monte carlo my security comes on then a red battery light and sometimes a bell sounds.battery in morning very rarely cannot start car . battery and altinator check out good

I would get one of those cheap meters that plug into the cigarette lighter they cost about 5 dollars and it will monitor you system voltage. You might have an intermittent problem. Make sure your battery terminals are clean that means taking them off and cleaning them with a tool that brushes both sides with wire. I still think you have a bad battery or alternator. Your starter could be drawing to many amps also

Adjust the steering wheel for access.
Using a small, flat-bladed tool, gently remove the bezel from the ignition lock cylinder.
For the Impala, remove the right and the left access covers from the instrument panel (IP) fuse block.
For the Monte Carlo, remove the left access cover from the IP fuse block.

No passlock passkey but still having problems with security light & stalling

The 2003 Monte Carlo definitely has an antitheft system. That is a fact. Though you cannot see the chip on the key like the older VATS version, these keys have a transponder hidden in the plastic head of the key that communicates a signal to the reciever in your ignition. The security light illuminating on the dash only has 1 purpose, and that is to tell you of the failure in your antitheft system (passlock or passkey). The intermittent starting is a dead give away of this problem and will only get worse until it doesnt start at all. You need to isolate the problem or bypass the system entirely. The hard part is finding what part of the system is failing. This link has all the info you need, plus pictures and a 100% cure if so desired.

My scurity light on and car won't start whst

Most GM vehicles have an antitheft system build in. The 2001 Monte Carlo is one of these cars. This system is called Passlock. It basically works like this. Along with the key and everything that a key normally does, these keys are special and have a transponder embedded in them. This communicates a signal to your ignition/lock cylinder via radio waves. This then communicates that signal to the TDM (Theft Deterrent Module) which then ALLOWS the starter to start or injector to pulse. So basically if any parts of this system are compromised, broken, or failing, your car will refuse to start or run, most everything else in the car will seem to work fine, and a light that says SECURITY will illuminate on the dash or instrument panel. You have 3 options. Take your car to a dealer and let them charge you for whatever they feel like, start changing out parts until you find the failed one, or just bypass the entire system so this can never happen again. The bypass is the best way to go in my opinion. I've installed dozens of these and never had one fail or had the problem reoccur. Take a look at this link. It is full of info on the GM security systems, pictures to help understand the problem, and a few links to help you find a bypass suitable for your vehicle

01 monte carlo securty & battey light problm

I had the same problem. Also, "service traction system" warning light, "service engine soon", and "trac off" warnings. Audio system locks every time the voltmeter goes flat. I expected an expensive repair bill. On a hunch, I pulled both battery terminals, scrubbed all points of contact vigorously with a wire "toothbrush" and baking soda paste. (They didn't look like they needed it at all) Reconnected, tightened securely, started engine , and everything is back to normal. Zero cost, 10 minutes of your time.
