Question about 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier

1 Answer

1998 Chevy Cavalier 2.2L: Car hesitates at idle and low speeds.

I took good care of my cavalier. I recently moved to a new town and found it hard to keep up with maintenance. The only problem with the car at that time was slow acceleration. I had also noticed that the car has developed a leak from the head gasket. When I finally found the time to give the car a tune-up, I changed the oil, oil filter, topped off the transmission fluid, and coolant. The car ran awesome for two days, then the problem started. The car seems to hesitate, like the car is about to stop, at idle and at low speeds. The check engine light came on and I'm worried the problem may get worse if I don't fine the problem.

Your vehicle’s computer system has self-testing capability. When the computer senses that there is a problem with one of the components or sensors it stores the correspondent trouble code(s) in its memory and lights up the "Check Engine" or "Service Engine Soon" light to tell you that there is a problem and you need to diagnosed and repaired it. First step is to find out what the codes are that turned on the light. I would guess it is going to be a misfire code. And the head gasket leak, in the corner of the head on the side near the transmission? Common problem with the 2.2L and could be related to the poor idle. I would have the head gasket leak repair very soon before it creates more problems. Let me know if you need any other help.

You have a device called the idle air controller. This controls the idle speed. You can clean it out with spray carb cleaner. This may cure your problem. Also replace the PCV valve.

There's a wiring connector located below the battery box, you can see it better from under the car. Check to see if any of the wires coming out of the connector are green from corrison, if so carefully splice in new wire(s) to repair, this is caused from the drippage from the battery tray.

replace all vac lines first , then you need to get someone to run fuel pump pressure test to be sure you are getting proper fuel pressure , then take o propane torch ( not lit of course and go around all vac lines and intake with motor running and see if motor speeds up when you are holding it next to any suspected vac leak the tranny in this mod shifts off electric solenoids check to be sure all battery connections are clean and that i wire that ground the motor off the battery is in good condition and clean and tight , however the main care should be to vacuum and fuel pressure
