2003 ford ranger parking brake won't fully release

I used my parking brake and it won't fully release. passandger side is fine. Driver side is heating up and smoking from friction. I can feel the truck slow down quickly after letting off the gas so I know there is something stuck keeping the brake compressed. How can I solve this?

There is a TSB for this as I have the same issue. if damp and cold the drums are now very capable of throwing off the moisture and the pad sticks to the drum. remove the drum, clean it, replace pads if necessary and drum and then silicone all the points where moisture can enter the drums there is also a shim kit available for the TSB your ford dealer will know about it. At least he should. I operate a foreign domestic shop and I know about it..

Sometimes back up a good 20 to 30 feet will do the trick. if that fails you can jack it up and remove the tire on the side you think it is stuck. Put a block of wood between the bolts and hit it with a rubber mallet until the brake releases. you'll have to play around with it a bit but it will release eventually. then either have to cable replaced or never use the emergency brake again your choice. Hope this helps.

Why is my ford ranger still stuck in park after I changed my brake lite switch

It either has an open or a bad connection. Reconnect to make sure as the brake light switch controls the release of the gear lever for safety reasons.

1995 Ford Escort Wagon Automatic, Won't shift

Hi there,

Most modern automatic cars require the driver to depress the brake pedal first, to allow releasing the gear out of Park.

Some automatic transmissions also provide an 'overide' switch near the gear lever, to allow manual release of the gear lever.

If neither of the above resolve this, then you will need to check the operation of your brake switch, mounted on the brake pedal.

2000 Ford Taurus Wagon. Driver side rear caliper is not releasing fully. All pads and calipers were replaced at the same time. Notice diver side caliper sticking replaced and still sticks. Replaced brake...

I remember that each caliper is pushed back by "Rollout" after the brakes are pressed. If the caliper is harder to move it my not push back. May have to change O-ring seals on caliper.

Hope this helps.

good Luck

I suspect the parking brake cables are rusted & corroded inside the cable housings. They are coated but they do freeze up.
