Might be water inside the car leaked in slowly from the soft top in heavy rain, does the car smell slighly inside when all windows are closed? take the seats out and remove the water under the carpets, then leave everything to dry by slightly opening the windows for moisture to escape, try parking the car in the sun..........

The brake lamp circuits on your 1997 BMW Z3 are pretty "old-school" and straight forward. Fuse #46 (15 Amp), located in the Front Power Distribution Box at the left rear side of the engine compartment supplies battery voltage to the brake light switch via the VIOLET/GREEN wire going into the switch. When the bake pedal is depressed, the voltage leaves the brake lamp switch on the BLUE/RED wire and supplies power to all of the brake lamp bulbs.
The brake lamp circuits do branch off and go to several control modules. This is ONLY for module INPUT to tell the module that the brakes are being applied. These modules include: > Transmission Control Module > Cruise Control Module > ABS Control Module > Slip Control Module
The ONLY way that any of these modules could be affecting the operation of your brake lamps is if there is an internal short to ground in the module that is causing the brake lamp fuse to blow.
If NONE of your brake lamps are working, the most likely causes are: > Fuse #46 open (blown) > Defective brake lamp switch > Bad ground connection at ground G400 (Left side of luggage compartment) > All 3 of your brake lamp bulbs burned out.
Yes, the BLUE/RED wire could be broken as well, but I would check all the other things listed above first.
First try lubricating locks with powdered graphite. Avoid ALL liquid lock lubricants. Then work locks through all positions from passenger door. (single lock positions & double lock position) Lastly operate locks via boot lock.
fuse 56 and 57 control central locking, the issue is caused by surges typically in the front door lock actuators, normally at a dealer they would replace fuse 56 and 57 with a 20a mini fuse and if still occuring repl the door lock(s) that dont work or typically both front, first replace fuse 56 and 57 with 20a fuses as were too small from factory and than operate ten to 15 times, if it doesnt work at first dont panic, let the car go to sleep which takes about 16 min and than try again this problem has nothing to do with the key fob or the lock unlock button inside, also the fuses are located behind the glove box just rere the access panel and they are found at lower left section
most new BMW's the fuse block is located behind the glove box. There should be a pair of twist plastic fastners at the back of the glove box, twist and remove the plate and you should find the fuse box and fuse locater list.
stand beside it and hold the lock AND unlock buttons at the same time for about 5 seconds until you hear the locks "click" then you should be off to the races.... If that doesn't work, look inside the drivers manual, should be some literature about it in there
I have the same problem - Drivers door windows wing mirrors and drivers
door lock not working also air bag light on. The car has been to a BMW
specialist for over a week as the drivers door dead locked. The mechanic used his diagnostic
gadget which showed a problem with the drivers door. All other doors
windows locks work except drivers door. Has check the power supply to
the drivers door switch all ok. Is the problem with this internal
window control switch and how does this affect the drivers door lock?
