[Archive] Enginge surges RPMS drop while driving OEM Issues. ... I so hope somebody has a clue as to what is causing my '02 Envoy's (182k) engine to ... I'll be driving and when I get up to around 35 - 45 MPH sometimes my ...
you only have to go to the nearest place to have the fault codes read. converters cab break up and block the exhaust but this is after high rpms and constant high speed driving and exhaust mufflers very seldom block up. The restricted rpms indicate that the engine /transmission is in protected mode and that will be revealed by the fault codes obtained from the reading.
Well with no other info, your transmission might not be shifting. Please check fluid level and reply. Also is the check, engine light on? You may be on limp mode if it is on. Worst case you need a new transmission best case low fluid level.
First I need to ask is it a 4 speed or a 3 speed transmission. If it's a 4 speed when driving down the road pull it from drive to third gear. You shpuld hear the engine speed up if it does not then that means you have on 4th gear and you will have to take it to a transmission shop. If it's a 3 speed then just count the shift points if all 3 gears are present then drive down the road and see if the van goes into tcc. When you mean the rpms are high how high are they.
My cougar does the same, it starts and then about 1 minute later (or so) the check engine light comes on and the car idles really high, with black smoke out the exhaust. It stays in second gear i think and it will not shift out of it. Max speed is 40 mph with the rpms screaming, it will go off after a long time but this is agrivating. I have a 94 mercury cougar xr7 3.8 ltr Any help please?
If it's the check engine light, I'd look at the radiator for partial internal obstruction...In colder temps or running at speed it tends to run a bit cooler. RPM change may be computer attempting to compensate for this. I'm not a KIA expert, but this applies to any vehicle. Also check your coolant level. If it's low it will also act this way.
