Behind left rear wheel there is a continual thumping sound that seems associated with the airconditioning system. This is all wheel drive and was their top of the line Aviator, if that adds any info or equipment. Everything seems to work ok except for the noise. It appears that turning the a/c up increases the volume but not the frequency of the thumping. This noise is whether stopped or moving.

Re: 2004 Lincoln Aviator thumping sound
The problem is the rear thermostatic expansion valve (TXV).
It is behind the left rear quarter trim panel. You can pull the panel back to access the valve to make sure that that is the noise. If so you will nedd to have AC system evacuated and replace valve and recharge the system. The part number is YF2Z-19849-AA.

You could possibly have wheel bearing problems
that is very serious. If you can't check yourself
hire somebody. It means your wheel or wheels could
come off going down the interstate. Jack up one
side to clear the ground. Wiggle the wheel and tire
if it's tight ok, if it's loose very important to fix it
i think the AWD on the 04 is full time. The 05 can be cut off.
hope it's not too bad.

Does a 2004 Lincoln Aviator have an interior air conditioner filter? Left side vent is blowing little air, have added coolant, didn't help with the blowing but did with the cooling some. Mechanic said he couldn't find filter
I had a resent exp with this noise coming from my rear right... after 5 trips to Sears.... It is the parking brake shoe slaping around... ahave that wheel removed and the brake and the rotor... and behold the broken parking brake shoe will most likley fall out once the above is taken apart......
this is your rear differential making noise. I would have it serviced and make sure fluid is clean. these are known for noisy diffs will need to be rebuilt. depending on how loud it can run a long time like this
The problem is the Lincoln Aviator is a piece of junk!!!! If anyone is thinking about purchasing one turn around and run. I cant begin to tell you how many problems i'v had and continue to have w/my 04 Aviator. I know this aint much help I just don't want to see anyone else end up like us...
I just changed the fuel filter on my 2003 Aviator and it was a pain. Aftwer looking and looking I finally found it. It is located under the truck at the center of the front crossmember behind a shield. Two bolts hold the shield and there are two quick release hoses on the fuel filter itsself. Good luck!!!
