I have a 1997 S10 pickup. It is a manual transmission. Just yesterday, I began to hear a rattling coming from under the vehicle. No visible damage. It only happens when I either release on the gas pedal or between shifting gears...no noise when I am in 5th gear on the highway...unless I release the gass pedal. Any ideas what could be making the noise.

The 2.2L engine is fairly universal. You may need to use the original crankshaft position sensor, however. The 96 had a different connector than the 97 engines had. You should not have too much trouble swapping out this engine. Chevrolet is really good about not changing too many items for each year.
This may sound stupid, but I've had what sounds like the same problem until yesterday! Take the vacum line off the EGR valve and see if it stops!?! I thought it was the transmission too, so did the mechanic and the transmission shop, but he told me to drive it till it got worse, yesterday it sounded like the AC comp. It was the EGR valve, took it off and pluged the hose, haven't heard either noise. It's worth a try!
can you hear the pump in tank running? it should come on for a few seconds when you cut key on. sometimes you can beat on tank with your hand while someone cycles key on and get the pump to kick in. this is a temp fix though if you need a pump i find it easier to remove the bed to gain access to tank.
