Thanks for your two answers. Will try them when light tomorrow. Have already taken wheel and drum off. What I really need is the repair manual to show me how to remove the two half -moon brake disks which appear to have clamped tight, whether due to the handbrake or their own springs - or guidelines for this. Thanks.

Turn thr "Star wheel" between the brake pads with a screwdriver. Count the number of notches. Once you have the brakes freed up, reassemble and adjust using the same number of nutches in the opposite direction. You most likely have a cable stuck in locked position. If possible, DRY LUBE it. If not, Install a new cable or sleeve.

If you can take the tire off, find the cable that is for the e-brake and lubricate it with silicone and pull the cable with your hand from under the car or where ever you can get access to it .Or if it is the drum brake you can hit it with a hammer around the drum to free it up. DO NOT SMASH IT ,just go around the drum and hit it lightley.

There should be a button at the end of the handbrake. may have to pull up on hand-brake to push button in.

How to adjust parking brake on 1993 chevy lumina ?

  • Adjustments

  1. Apply service brake pedal three times with a force of approximately 175 lbs.

  2. Fully apply and release parking brake three times. Full application may require two pedal strokes.

  3. Raise and support vehicle, then mark relationship between wheel and axle flange.

  4. Check parking brake pedal assembly for full release as follows:

    1. Turn ignition switch to On position.

    2. If ``Brake\'\' lamp is illuminated, operate manual brake release and pull downward on front parking brake cable to remove slack from pedal assembly.

  1. Remove rear wheel and tire assemblies, then install two lug nuts to retain each rotor assembly.

  2. If two parking brake levers on both calipers are not against lever stops on caliper housings, check for binding in rear cables and/or loosen cables at adjuster until both left and right levers are against their stops.

  3. Tighten parking brake cable at adjuster until either the left or right lever begins to move off the stop, then loosen adjustment until lever moves back barely touching stop.

  4. Operate parking brake several times to check adjustments. A firm pedal feel should be obtained by pumping pedal two full strokes and rear wheels should not rotate forward when parking brake is fully applied.

  5. Install wheel and tire assemblies, aligning marks made in step 3.

Started the engine put car in gear, and released

First, try rocking the vehicle a little. If it still doesn't help, I know this sounds backwoods, but hit it in the center of the hub with a good sized hammer, and the brakes will release. This is common with mechanical handbrakes. (rear wheels only)

Where is the handbrake adjuster on Volvo 440 please.

Lift your car up, don't remove the wheels, no brakes, no gear. At the inner side of your rear wheels you'll see the brake clipper. There is a dust cap of appr. 1cm diameter, remove this cap and take a INBUS wrench. Turn the inner screw clockwise till the wheel stops. Then turn the screw 1/2 turn back. Do the same on the other side. Don't try the adjust the brake cable inside the car! Thats only used if you change the cable!

The passenger rear door on the left will not open...

I don't believe I have seen a Volvo four door hatch-back here in the US, but my guess would be child-proof locks on the rear. Open the front doors and look for any switches on the front edge of the back doors. If there aren't any, check the owner's manual before contacting your dealer.
