Question about 1991 Mazda 626

No gear at all

Having change the clutch and pressure plate and put gearbox back on and got everything esle fitted,i put more trasmisson oil into the gear box and after i replaced the speedo plug the speedo stopped working after 20 miles and could not get any gears.having got the car back home i checked the speedo plug and the bottom half that goes into the gearbox is gone it seems to have gone into the gearbox is this my problem why the gears have stopped working?

Take ur gear box of and chech wear ur speedo plug is and if ur car run before ur plug got lost then yh thats ur proplem

Hi i just put a new master cylinder a month back now today my clutch felt hard and when i put it in reverse heard a broken sound clutch went flat and oil came from the master what can the problem be


Umm...

A mechanical 'breaking noise' doesn't sound good. It's hard to diagnose a problem online without being there to see/hear the vehicle. But .. it may be that your clutch pressure plate has broken/ release/throwout bearing has broken?

It's difficult to see why the master cylinder should leak - unless it was incorrectly fitted in the first place?

Just to check ... The master cylinder is in the engine bay/compartment and is where you top up with clutch fluid. When a master cylinder fails it usually results in no pressure at the clutch pedal, not a leak.

The clutch slave cylinder is the one that does all the work. When you press the pedal hydraulic pressure is sent from the master cylinder to the slave cylinder - which then pushes the release/throwout bearing against the clutch pressure plate and 'disconnects' the driven plate .. allowing you to change gear.

The slave cylinder is the one that does all the hard work - it is located somewhere where engine and gearbox mate together, usually at the bottom right/left. It's usually the one that fails/leaks. It's quite easy to replace..

I don't think it is anything to do with reverse gear. It's more to do with the clutch pedal being depressed - and, I would suspect - something has failed.

Basically, a clutch is 3 parts. There's the 'pressure plate' which bolts onto your flywheel. The pressure plate is a 'spring'. You depress the clutch pedal and the release/throwout bearing presses onto the centre of the pressure plate causing the 'fingers' - the springs - to bend back and take pressure off the driven plate - which is the link - the drive - between engine and gearbox.

If you have a leak your clutch will not work. This causes a 'grinding/crashing' noise when you try to change gear. The first thing you should do is check where the leak is coming from and do something about it.

The 'noise' that you mention may be due to the fact that the gears are 'grinding' as they try to mesh together without the use of the clutch.

The first thing you should do is check why there's a leak. It's difficult to see why a new master cylinder is leaking unless it was incorrectly fitted and damaged (pipes incorrectly connected..).

If it's the slave cylinder that is leaking - replace it. Easy job.

If Master cylinder and slave cylinder are ok - you have to look at your clutch unit. A clutch is always replaced with 3 parts ... throwout bearing/pressure plate and driven disk.

if you have just replaced the clutch and pressure plate in the vehicle and the noise has just started, I suspect that you have the clutch plate in back to front and the hub and damper springs and knocking on the flywheel bolt heads.
It would be a good idea to check the gearbox oil level as you may have lost more that realised when pulling the box

If the clutch is not disengaging when you put your foot on the clutch ( if the system has been bled correctly or cable fitted correctly ) then the problem is that the clutch plate is in the wrong way round and the clutch hub with the springs is hitting on the flywheel bolts

yes because the cluch and pressure plate need to come off around the gear that fits into the transmission.

Hi the problem you are having is going to be with the clutch plate you will find that it has worn down to the metal pins and has no actual clutch plate left.

What is happening is that when you put the car in gear and let the clutch up the clutch is slipping on the plate instead of gripping and this is why you loose the drive.

To solve this problem your going to need to buy a clutch repair kit if your doing the sork yourself or get someone else to fit the parts for you.

Your going to need to replace the following:
pressure plate
clutch plate
thrust bearing.

dont try driving the car as it is as you could cause damage to the gearbox if the clutch plate and pressure plate shatter so its not worth trying to move the car until you have had the clutch fixed.

getting the clutch replaced involves removing the gearbox from the engine and this is best done with the car on ramps as the gear box will come out from the bottom of the car so it needs to be high enough off the floor to allow you to remove the gear box, its not a hard job if you have done it before but it is heavy work and if you have not done this before then your best getting someone else to replace the clutch for you.

getting the clutch changed will solve your problem and get you up and running again in no time.

hi, if you have a manual gearbox then you dont have a torque converter a torque converter is what changes the gears in an automatic gearbox as your is manual all you will have inside your gearbox is a pressure plate a clutch plate and a thrust bearing witch operates the clutch when you press the pedal down.
The only thing you need to line up on a manual box is when you have fitted the new clutch you need to have a tool that holds the clutch plate central so that when you tighten the bolts up on the pressure plate the clutch stays central if you dont do this you wont be able to get the gearbox back onto the engine as the spline from the gearbox wont be able to go through the center of the clutch into the engine.

You can make or use you own tool to hold the clitch dead center as long as its a good fit and about the same size as the spline, so once you have the new clutch in and the pressure plate loosely bolted on you can still move the clutch around behind the pressure plate now right in the center their is a hole in the pressure plate and the clutch plate this is where the tool needs to be put so that the clutch plate remains dead center whilst you tighten the pressure plate up this will then make sure that the spline on the gearbox lines up properly not doing this will make it impossible to get the gearbox on properly.

How do you change the clutch and pressure plate?


Easily. Remove the gear box, the roller bearing is fitted to the box, so yoou dont have to worry. The clutch and plate is fixed to the engine held in with hex nuts, you'll need allan keys to remove them, remove the bolts and the clutch and pressure plate will fall away. Take the new one from the box, being carefull not to contaminate with grease or oil that is on your hands, fit the pressure plate into the clutch assembly and line up to the engine and loosly tighten up so the pressure plate will move with a little resistance. This is where the fun starts. Get your socket set handle and push it through the housing into the engine. Centralise the pressure plate as accurately as you can. Offer the gearbox slowly to the clutch and try to push it home. The pressureplate should have enought movement in it to move slightly to allow the gear box to fit. Once fitted, slowly and levelly remove the box, then tighten all of the clutch housing into place. Refit the box, tighten and go for a cup of coffee to congratulate yourself! The only other adjustments you have to make are to the clutch cable. Loosen the lock nut, loosen the adjuster bolt, tighten the adjuster bolt until the cable becomes taught, depress the clutch and you should feel the clutch release. Tighten the locknot and that's it. X plate?? 1981?? showing my age ----got me this one thats for sure ??oil level fine .....you sure because it sounds like either low oil ,bent gearchange or a bent clutch plate or worn cover .But and big BUT here ,could the gearshaft be bent,or damaged where it comes out the transmission tunnel .disconnect it from the gearbox and try the mechanism ,also the ball fitting in the bottom of the gearstick

sounds like a new clutch is needed,pressure plate weak ,oil on clutch causing it to stick,thrust bearing collapsing as its plastic ,spigot shaft rusty causing clutch plate to stick ,evan more causes but i could write all night ,check oil in gearbox
