Question about 1996 Saab 9000

1 Answer

My Saab 9000 is dropping into second gear very hard.

The Saab is a 1996 9000 v4 hatch w/ 160000 miles on it. I just bought it two weeks ago from a guy who owns Saab Automation a place that specializes in selling used cars and working on them. The guy did not actaully sell it but rather his daughter and was done in a 3rd party fashion as is. The car is said to have a new engine (rebuilt and rebuilt turbo). The car drops into second very hard after the car warms up. At first when started it drives smooth and gets worse as it warms up about 5 minutes. The car after driving for about a half hour will start to seem to drop harder in second gear although maybe just more often. ALSO at about a half an hour or more of driving car will sort of stick in second gear for a second before swithching gears. ALL OTHER gears are fine and drive very smooth. IS IT THE TRANSMISSION??? I really hope not I jsut got the car from what I though was a reliable person. I am a college student and spent all my money getting this car and putting it on the road. Is it the transmission OR does it sound like something else OR for the sake of my worrying COULD it be something else. Hopefully bringing it down to the daughters father-mechanic (Saab Guy) within nexy few days really busy w school but cant get this out of my head. Thanks SO SO much for any information you can give me. Hope you have some good news and arent just trying to get my email info.Thanks-Jason

If i were you i would get back to where you bought it as soon as posible, if he's any kind of dealer and with a reputation to uphold he will fix it for you, and you say he specializes on this type of car he most likely knows whats wrong with it.

Engine hard to start at times, also runs rough at idle

Came across a fault similar to this a few years ago and it turned out to be the wires going into the distributor had become dry and brittle due to engine heat.Excessive resistance in the wires made vehicle hard to start and caused problems when accelerating hard.

Your Saab does not have a timing belt, it has a chain. You need to remove the chain tensioner and see how much it has extended. If it has plenty yet to go, your chain is fine to go more miles. If it is fully extended or nearly so, you are on borrowed time.
