Question about 2001 Saturn L-Series

Key won't turn in the ignition

Key goes in but won't turn. Car had to be towed to a garage. Still waiting for a part from the Saturn dealership. Is this going to be an ongoing problem with this vehicle? I see alot of posts regarding similar situations, and is there a permanent solution?

Same issue. This happened to us last summer but after a good deal of key jiggling and steering-wheel turning (and probably quite a bit of pounding on things) the key finally turned. Not so lucky this time.

Same issue. Then once the key does finally turn, the car needs to be put into neutral in order for the car to start. It will not start in the park position.

Check to see if your key is an original or if it has been re-keyed by a locksmith. I had a similar problem with my 2001 L200 and it was preventing me from getting to work on time. So I took it to Saturn, they gave me an original key, and it's worked like a dream ever since. I bought another keyless remote because my car was a repo and that was why I didnt have an original, and it was about $80.00 for both about 2 years ago. I hope that helps.

Car won't start security light blinks

If the security light is blinking, then the security system is DEFINATELY the reason why your car won't start. The actual cause of the problem is MOST LIKELY a defective ignition switch that is not sending the information from your key to the computer.

Try this:

FIRST try a different key if you have more than one for the vehicle. I have had cars towed into my shop simply because someone was trying to use a cheap duplicate key that was cut at the hardware store. These keys are fine for the doors and trunk. They are great to have around in case you lock your keys in your car. However, they do not have the electronics built into them to allow for engine starting.

If you are using the correct key and a second key also does not work. then...
1. set your parking brake (this will disable your daytime running lamps and conserve battery power.)
2. Connect a battery charger to the vehicle battery if you have one, or see if someone can connect to your battery with jumper cables.
3. Turn the ignition to the START position for about one second. Then release the key to the RUN position. DO NOT turn the ignition OFF.
4. Wait about 10 minutes until the security light quits flashing. Turn the key (without turning it off) to the START position again. The engine should start. If it does not, then you will have to get your car towed in for service.

HINT: you may want to try this a couple times to make sure you are doing it correctly before towing.

If it does start, it is recommended that you have your security system checked for fault codes. I have seen this many times, and it only gets worse and does it more often until this method no longer works to get it started.

After changing the fan belt at a garage, my Mazda 6 would not start. We trried using the extra key remote, but the car still will not start. What is the problem/solution? Is there a special Security...

Hi there,

Your Mazda 6 keys have transponders built in and only the correct key I.D. will activate your vehicle's immobilizer.

I'm at a loss as to how changing a fan belt could have altered your vehicle's immobilizer system - are you absolutely certain the garage hasn't disturbed any of the electronics?

First, we need to establish whether your vehicle's immobilizer still considers your keys as valid.

- Insert Key # 1 and turn ignition to ON (do not start).
Observe the "Security" light in the cluster - it should illuminate, then turn off after approx. 3 seconds. If this works, then Key # 1 is considered still vaild.
- quickly turn Key 1 back to LOCK position and remove key.

Wait 5 seconds...

- Insert Key # 2 and turn ignition to ON (do not start).
Observe the "Security" light in the cluster - it should illuminate, then turn off after approx. 3 seconds. If this works, then Key # 2 is considered still vaild.

Note: if Security light does not behave as above and keys still won't start your car, then your keys are no longer validated by the PCM

If this is the case, then unfortunately unlike other manufacturers, only Mazda will be able to re-program your key's ID into your vehicle's PCM. Contact your local Mazda Dealership to discuss.

Regards,

Scott

I just want to get it started 1997 Saturn SL so i can drive it to the repair shop the key is stuck in ignition and will not come out or turn It is pulled into garage and can not get it towed

try this. tap on the end of the key; tapping in the direction of key insertion. Use a handle from a screwdriver to lightly tap on the end of the key. sometimes this will free up the lock enough to get it to turn.

Make sure the lock isnt binding because of the steering lock. You may have to pull hard over on the steering wheel and try to turn the key.

Sometimes my 2008 sonata won't start back up after turning off engine, I have to wait at least 20-45 minutes for it to start back up. I hear 1 click when I turn the key and everything else seems to...

Sounds like it could be a similar issue to what I just went through. My car wouldn't start on two separate occasions after I had refilled my tank. First time happened a little over a month ago, the starter would crank, and crank, but no signs of life in the engine. Tested the spark plugs, I was getting spark, but the ****** wouldn't start.
Had it towed to the dealership, and they said after 4 long attempts, they got it to start. I took it home, and the next morning I couldn't start it again. Towed it back a second time, and it started right up for them. Drove it back home again and a a month later things started acting up again.
A few days ago the wife pulled the car out of the garage, where the car was level, stopped the car on our slanted driveway and when she came back to start it just minutes later, it hesitated, but did turn over. I filled up the tank and the very next morning, I could not start my car again.
Called for a tow from AAA, and the driver said "let me try something". Pulled out a hammer, and wacked the bottom of my gas tank 4 or 5 times. The tow guy gets in, tuns the ignition to engage the fuel pump (didn't turn the key all the way), he does this about 4 times, then the very next turn of the key it starts right up. The driver said it sounded like a bad fuel pump.
I drive the car back to the dealership (this is the third time) and talk to the same guy I had dealt with all along. He calls me later in the day to tell me they finally got it to not start and were able to isolate the problem to the fuel pump sensor. They replaced the fuel pump assembly and I was off and running.
Hope this helps!

YOU HAVE TO GO TO DEALERSHIP.THEY WILL HAVE TO GET YOU REPLACEMENT KEYS USING IGNITION LOCK NUMBER OR USING ORIGINAL PATTERN.WHEN YOU GET THE NEW KEY.JUST PUT NEW KEY IN THE IGNITION SWITCH.TURN IGNITION SWITCH TO THE ON POSITION FOR 10 MINUTES UNTIL THEFT SECURITY LIGHT TURN OFF OR DISAPPEAR.THEN TURN OFF IGNITION SWITCH WAIT 10 SECONDS TRY STARTING THE VECHICLE IF THEFT LIGHT STILL ON.YOU WILL NEED DEALERSHIP TO USE A DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENT TO CODE SCAN AND ERASE THEFT SECURITY CODE.

Security light keeps going on, I'm not able to start it then... how do I disable this?

IF YOU AWAY FROM HOME. LIKE AT WORK, SHOPPING MALL OR STORE.WHEN YOU GET IN CAR AND IT DONT CRANK.PUT KEY IN THE IGNITION SWITCH AND TURN IGNITION SWITCH TO THE ON POSITION FOR 10 MINUTE.UNTIL YOU SEE THE SECURITY LIGHT TURN OFF. WHEN SECURITY LIGHT TURN OFF TURN OFF IGNITION SWITCH WAIT FOR 5 SECONDS. THEN TRY STARTING VECHICLE SHOULD START.TAKE VECHICLE TO DEALERSHIP.THEY WILL HAVE SCAN VECHICLE.YOUR PROBLEM COULD BE WORN IGNITION KEYS OR WORN IGNITION SWITCH ALSO FAULTY BCM.THE DEALERSHIP HAS TO FIX AND REPROGRAM THEFT SECURITY SYSTEM.IF YOU REPLACE KEYS, IGNITION SWITCH OR BCM. THE 10 MINUTE TRICK WILL GET CAR STARTED TO GET HOME OR SHOP.BUT DONT KEEP DRIVING BECAUSE IT WILL COME TO A POINT WHERE VECHICLE WONT CRANK AGAIN.

Recently our 2006 Saturn Ion has started turning on the not starting alarm. We have to wait 10 min. to be able to start it again. We don't know what we are doing differently

sound like problem is in the security anti theft system.your car keys are worn or ignition switch. the bcm and pcm dont recognize keys this will disable car from cranking.this is a dealership fix.

I have a 2001 saturn sc and the security light stays on

Put the key in the ignition and turn it to RUN and leave it for 10 minutes. Come back and remove the key and repeat the process 2 more times without trying to start it. Because the passive security got tripped sometimes doing this will help it to re-recognize the key and work but I ended having to tow and get my car fixed at the dealership. Good luck.
