Is the car a Manual or Automatic. If it is a manual you shouldn't have to add fluid unless you are having it serviced.

You can't put the transmission fluid in yourself on an auto or manual transmission for a 2002 lancer es. It has to be injected into the transmission through a nipple that is on the transmission.

Most likely the transmission. Could be in the valve body or it may be the reverse clutch piston seal (if it is a separate unit) and lastly it may be something stuck in the fluid passages in the transmission body.

Where do I add the transmission fluid on a 2002 Mitshubshi Lancer?

You add the automatic transmission fluid through the dipstick/level check hole ( on the transmission) using a long skinny funnel. Be sure to only use Diamond ATF SP III or an equivalent. Mitsubishi transmissions require regular fluid changes (every 30, 000 to 35,000 miles) with the correct fluid or they will not shift correctly.
