Question about 2007 Honda CR-V

Honda CRV brake calipers

Dealership told us today that the calipers for both front & back brakes would need to be serviced because the calipers slide dry causing heat. Was told by tech that Honda does not lube the calipers and this problem does occur. My question is why don't they lube them at the plant? Ask the tech- didn't get an answer. It's 2008 CRV LX with 14,000 miles.
The job is going to cost $120.00. To me, I don't think I should pay for this, they should have informed me about this potential problem when I purchased the car in January 2008.

    So, you're saying that lubing is part of the job in the plant. So, why is the tech telling us that they don't. I am beginning to wonder if this is simply a "money grab" on their (dealership) part? Am I right? Thanks for any information

Yes, it's typical for any vehicle to have the front brake pads and rotors replaced at 40,000 miles or less. A complete service would involve (2) new front brake rotors, (1 set) of new front brake pads (this includes 4 pads), brake fluid, silicone brake grease for the slide pins and possibly new slide pins (If they're corroded) and rubber seals for the slide pins. Because of the age of your vehicle, it's always a good idea to have the brake fluid changed (This means that your mechanic should bleed the brake system by opening the bleed screw on all (4) brake calipers). Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time and will start to break down (Lower the boiling point) and cause rust inside the system making your brakes less effective. Look at the brake fluid reservoir under the hood. The fluid should appear either clear (Perfectly clean) or slightly yellowish. If it appears to be light to dark brown, it's time to change it. If I were you, I would shop around for prices at other reputable service shops. Your dealer is going to charge you top dollar for this service. Hope this helps.

Back brakes coming on before front on snow and skidding


the way the car brakes are on todays cars are. the front brakes a supposed to grab a second before back brakes. so I would look to see if fluid is ok! and check out the front brakes, you could have a sticking caliper, thats stuck in and not applying the front brakes properly. have a good day !! also when you check the brakes make sure the caliper slide pins are ok. if not the caliper will hang up. if they are sticking replace caliper pins and grease them up good so caliper slides on them. my 2000 malibu had a similar problem and I found that the pins on caliper were bad, replaced them and all is fine.

will try to help. 1st remove the wheel, then remove the 2 caliper bolts that hold the brake caliper on. after removal of brake caliper, [it should just pull off after the 2 bolts are removed] replace the brake pads[be sure to apply anti squeal lube to the outer side of the pads..not the pad itself,the one not contacting the brake rotor] install the pads, the you will need a C clamp to push the brake caliper pistons back into the caliper. i've used this installation easily. use the old pad ,place it against the caliper piston,then apply the C clamp and push the caliper piston back into the brake caliper, then the brake caliper will slide back over the new pads easily, no need to bleed the brakes if you use this solution. replace the brake caliper bolts, then go to next side and repeat the process. after the replacement of the front brake pads,pump the brakes with engine running!!! it's really a simple process. be sure the brake pads are facing the brake rotors with the [pads] facicing the rotors. no metal facing metal. easy! if you have added brake fluid recently, do not be alarmed if you see fluid coming out of the brake master cylinder,when you use the C clamp to collaspe the brake caliper back into the recessed position. [as always when you have to add brake fluid to the brake master cylinder,it only means your brakes are wearing naturally. if you have a vibration in front wheels or steering wheel when braking, you have a brake rotor or both front brake rotors that need replacement with your brakes also. hope this helps and as always, please get a second opinion if you have doubt. an expert will be happy to help. thank you for choosing fixya.com

How can I change the rotors and brakes on a 2006 Cadillac?


Front brake
Step 1: Identify Front Disc Brake Components

Most front disc brake components include: brake rotor, brake pads, brake caliper, caliper mount and brake flex hose. Brake service usual occurs between 20,000 and 40,000 miles depending on driver habits, road conditions and brake pad/ rotor materials used.
Step 2: Remove Brake Caliper to Replace Pads

Locate primary caliper mounting bolts; apply wrench pressure counter-clockwise (When looking at the head of the bolt) to remove the bolts, upper and lower. Make sure the bolt threads are in good shape and replace if necessary.
Step 3: Remove Front Brake Caliper

After removing the primary caliper mounting bolts lift the brake caliper off of the rotor and then tie or secure to the side, being careful not to bend or kink the brake caliper flex hose. Thoroughly inspect brake caliper and brake hoses for leakage, cracks or chaffing and replace as needed. Next remove the brake pads (If not mounted in the caliper) and secondary caliper mounting bolts. Notice how great protective gloves work, most technicians use them on the job today.
Step 4: Remove Brake Pads

Once the brake pads have been removed, make sure if there is anti rattle hardware to transfer to the new brake pads. Some brake pad manufacturers will include the proper lube (Caliper slides) and anti-rattle hardware to ensure proper performance of their product.
Step 5: Remove Caliper Mount

Finish removing secondary caliper mount bolts and remove caliper mount. Note: clean and lube caliper slides and pad friction surfaces of all foreign material or build-up.
Step 6: Remove Brake Rotor

With the caliper mount out of the way you can now remove the brake rotor. Sometimes it can get stuck so you may need to tap it with a hammer or use penetrating oil to free it up. Some manufacturers use small screws to hold the rotor on as well. Clean and inspect wheel studs, replace if any are damaged. Also clean bearing hub rotor mount surface to ensure the proper mounting of the new brake rotor. Inspect the ABS sensor wheel for cracks or damage and replace as needed.
Step 7: Depressing the Brake Caliper

Resetting Brake Caliper
To install the new brake pads you must retract the brake caliper piston. Remove the master cylinder lid or open the brake caliper bleeder screw to allow excess brake fluid to be released if necessary. Install C clamp tool and gently tighten clamp until caliper piston is fully depressed. Note: use old brake pad to protect the caliper piston. Close the bleeders once the piston is retracted completely
Step 8: Installing New Brake Rotor

Install new brake rotor, the new rotor is manufactured with a protective film over the rotor to keep it from rusting, remove protective film with brake cleaner before installing; also after the brake job is complete you may experience a small amount of smoke from the rotor when first used. This is normal and will go away after the first couple of uses.
Step 9: Installing New Front Brake Pads

Reinstall the front brake caliper mount, and then install front brake pads. Make sure the pads are seated properly in the caliper mount; it must be a close fit to work properly..
Step 10: Reinstall Front Brake Caliper

Reinstall front brake caliper and reinstall caliper-mounting bolts, recheck all mounts and mounting bolts. Check the caliper slides to be sure there is no bind and that the caliper moves freely back and forth on the caliper slides. Bleed brake system per manufacturer's specifications to relieve any air trapped in the system. Before driving the vehicle, push the brake pedal down and let it up slowly, repeat until normal brake pedal operation resumes, this operation is forcing the brake pads to travel to the brake rotors.

To Remove:


  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of
    this section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:

    • Front wheel
    • Clip, 2 caliper pins, the anti-rattle spring then remove the 2 brake pads
      and the 4 anti-squeal shims

To Install:

CAUTION
Only replace brake pads on 1 side of the
vehicle at a time. Failure to use this procedure could cause the caliper pistons
on the opposite side of the vehicle to pop out requiring the reconditioning or
replacement of the brake caliper.


  1. Remove a small amount of brake fluid from the master cylinder.
  2. Install a used brake pad into the caliper and compress the caliper pistons.
  3. Apply disc brake grease to both sides of the inner anti-squeal shims.
  4. Install or connect the following:

    • Anti-squeal shims to the new brake pads
      NOTE: When replacing worn pads, the anti-squeal shims must be replaced
      together with the pads.

    • 2 brake pads
    • Anti-rattle spring and the 2 caliper pins
    • Clip
    • Front wheel

  5. Depress the brake pedal several times to seat the brake pads.
  6. Check the brake fluid level and top off as needed.

Rear
To Remove:


  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of
    this section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:

    • Rear wheel

    • Caliper assembly from rear caliper mounting
    • 2 brake pads with anti-squeal shims from rear caliper mounting
    • 2 anti-squeal shims from each disc brake pads
    • Pad wear indicator plate from the inner side disc brake pad
    • 4 pad support plates from the rear caliper mounting

To Install:


  1. Install or connect the following:

    • 4 pad support plates on the rear caliper mounting
    • Pad wear indicator plate on the inside brake pad
      Note: Install the pad wear indicator facing downward.

    • Anti-squeal shims on each brake pad
    • 2 disc brake pads with anti-squeal shims to the caliper assembly

  2. Apply lithium soap base glycol grease to the sliding part of 2 caliper slide
    pins.
  3. Install or connect the following:

    • Disc brake caliper assembly with 2 caliper slide pins
    • Torque to 65 ft-lbs (88 Nm)
    • Rear wheel

  4. Depress the brake pedal several times to seat the brake pads.
  5. Check the brake fluid level and top off as needed.

  3. Make matchmarks on the disc and the axle hub.

  1. Align matchmarks and disc onto axle hub.
  2. Install or connect the following:

    • Front brake caliper assembly with the 2 bolts

      1. Torque to 90 ft-lbs (123 Nm)

    • Front wheel

Will I need a caliper reset tool kit to change the brakes on my 2007 toyota sienna or will a standard c-clamp do the job? And since it is an ABS system, I assume that brakes must be bled, correct?


Brake Pads Removal & Installation Front To Remove:
  1. Remove the front wheels. Front brake caliper (exploded view) toyota-09-00-5838.gif

  2. Loosen the caliper bleeder.
  3. Hold the slide pin; remove the 2 mounting bolts and remove the brake caliper from the support.
  4. Support the caliper.
  5. Open the brake bleeder. Press the caliper piston into the bore.
  6. Close the bleeder after the piston has reached the bottom of the caliper bore.
  7. Remove the brake pads, support plates, wear indicators and anti squeal shims.
  8. Remove the slide pins and bushings from the caliper support.
To Install:
  1. Lubricate the slide pins and bushings with brake grease.
  2. Install the bushing on the slide pin.
  3. Install the slide pin on the caliper support.
  4. Install the brake pad support plates on the caliper supports.
  5. Lubricate the anti squeal shims with brake grease.
  6. Install the anti squeal shims on the brake pads.
  7. Install the pad wear indicator facing upward and install the pads on the caliper support.
  8. Install the caliper on the support.
  9. Install the 2 mounting bolts, hold the slide pins and tighten 25 ft-lb (34 Nm).
  10. Fill the reservoir and bleed the brakes.
  11. Install the front wheels.
Rear To Remove:
  1. Remove the rear wheels.
  2. Loosen the caliper bleeder. Rear brake caliper (exploded view) toyota-09-00-5842.gif

  3. Hold the slide pin; remove the 2 mounting bolts and rear brake caliper assembly from the support.
  4. Support the caliper.

It sounds like there is a problem with the current calipers, it would be cheaper to try replacing the current ones with a new one NOT FROM HONDA. buy an aftermarket caliper and try that. Dealerships will try to screw you over and take money from you when its not necessary.

I don't see much of a problem here...The only thing I find to be a bit odd is that rears needed service first. Front brakes do about 65-70% of stopping...generally they tend to wear first. Highway stopping and slowing requires just as much force (and wear) due to the fact that instead of slowing a slow moving vehicle, there is quite a bit more energy to dissipate (brakes convert the stored kinetic energy (momentum) of your vehicle in motion into heat...that's how they stop it from moving) It doesn't take much to slow or stop 3,000lbs (+) going slowly, to stop that same load going 70 is a whole different story.
Todays brake materials are superior to what was available years ago (thank you drag racers and NASCAR) But, because of EPA regulations (fuel mileage mandates) the mass of your brake system has been drastically reduced to the point that it's surprising that they last as long as they do. (mass = weight = less mpg) Having a larger caliper and rotor disipate heat far better than a small assembly can. Therefore essentially your brakes are being asked to do more with far less than ever before.
You can "customize" your system by adding ceramic linings and race type rotors, but the added expense may not justify the small longevity and performance benefit. The factory stuff needs to be a compromise in production cost and reliability. As the vehicle owner you are not bound by that compromise.
Getting nearly 30K between brake services is actually fairly decent. You could take the "sting" out of this service by learning how to do this work yourself. Using the best "premium" parts will cost you far less than dealer prices.
So, answering your question, I do not believe that the dealer is doing anything incorrectly, and the parts they are using are likely far better than most "bargain" parts. I also don't feel that there is anything design-wise that is bad in your vehicle, other than the constraints put on manufacturers regarding all vehicles and production cost. So, it's not just yours.

While driving today I noticed a burning smell and when I got out the front right wheel had smoke coming from the rotor and brake assembly what sould I do


Sounds like either the brake caliper has seized up or one of the brake pads has got jammed up. You need to remove the caliper and investigate further. ICheck to make sure the piston/s in the caliper move. Also remove the brake pads , clean up the slides and apply some brake grease on the tips of the brake pad metal backs where the may contact with the caliper and mounting brackets.
