Time should only be 2-3 hours, cost I am going to guess around $250. Thats guessing $100 an hour, most shops are about $70-$80 an hour, but they may try to put 4-5 hours on it. If you would like to do it yourself, I would say roughly 1.5 hours tops. Thats milking it. Need help?

Hi everyone! I have to fix the solenoid of a 1996 Mitsubishi van. Can I buy this part alone, or only with the starter motor? Which model should I get? Is the 1990 model adaptable on my 1996 van? What would...

Laurent,
Sounds like you have this narrowed down pretty good. Times are tough and every penny counts, so I will offer some advice. Replacement starters typically come with the solenoid. You can buy them separate, but the cost is usually only $20 or $30 less than the whole starter set up. Plus, many places will not accept the solenoid as a return but will accept the entire starter assembly if the starter turns out to not be the problem. Besides, the solenoid is just a bundle of wrapped copper wire and 99% of the time it is the actual starter mechanism and not an electrical problem.

I will try to help. Several things about some starters, I remember there were some which had shims needed for the (starter to block) mounting bolts. Seems like a certain clearance was needed for proper mesh of starter gear to ring gear.

If ring gear was replaced, was there a difference in the number of teeth on the ring gear? Your starter drive needs to match if there was a difference. Either way you need compatibile spacing.

Overadvanced motor. Fighting compression will strain the starter. Now there were some heavy duty starters for big Cadillac motor. But these starters would also mount on a Buick 350. If you have higher compression these heavy duty starters would be a good choice.

Turn key and makes clicking noise and it doesnt start. i turn the key several times then it starts. is this the starter or can it be the starter contacts?

Most likely the starter, a common problem on these, before replacing it make sure the battery is good and all connections are clean and tight. The starter contacts, actually solenoid contacts, are usually the cause, the contact parts are available at most toyota dealers but a lot have stopped selling them, replacing the contacts requires removing the solenoid and taking it apart which may cost about the same as a rebuilt starter after the labor cost involved.

What is the general cost of replacing a starter in a 2000 oldsmobile intrigue ? material and labor

Hello jenandthebor,

The starter will cost you somewhere between $190.00 and $400.00 depending where you buy it. The removal and installation should be about .75 hours so multiply that times your local rate.

If I where doing the job it would be about $250.00.

I hope this helps.

Regards,

netvan

How much should it cost to replace the starter in my 2004 Mercury Sable? I did it with a friend about 3 years ago but this time I have to pay a shop. This is the third starter. Only 68,000 miles on the...

You would have to shop around. Refurbished starters might run between $50 to $70. New ones $100 up. If you are having a mechanic do it, the repair cost for a 2 hour job might cost you $100 up. If you are to do it yourself, check with the internet. Complete easy installation instructions are availlable. Just type how to replace a starter on a 2004 Marcury Sable and print them out. Hope this serves you well and good luck with your project.

reach underneath and hit the starter housing a few times with a hammer,if it now works either replace the brushes in the starter which cost about $20.00 ,or replace the starter which costs about $90.00.(parts only for both estimates)

How expensive is to replace my 1992 300 zx water pump?

the labor due to that job its 5.2 hour and the pump cost around 100. the labor cost depends on how many dollars an hour the machanic is going to charge u. and i recommend to do the timing belt service ones at all (if u haven't done it before and if has more then 100,000 mil) cause it will cost u more if u do it in some other time.

Starter turns over but wont run sometimes (once every 2 months)

More than likely the starter contacts or solenoid are going bad which explains the intermittent staring problem. You can take out the starter and see if you can replace the contacts or replace the starter entirely. Since this is a starter problem a diagnostic scanner will not be able to pin point the problem. I would recommend replacing the starter altogether. A rebuilt or used one can cost appr. $300 and another $400 labor unless you can DIY.
