Check your wheel well plastic that goes underneath the fender... i had the same problem a couple days ago and i notice that the strut was hitting plastic.. either screw it back on or tuck it in somewhere..

1999 Toyota Corolla 1.6; After fitting new shocks the large ring/disc section (midway of the assembly) catches on plastic wheel housing assembly almost ripping it loose and damaging the rubber band around the disc section on the shock. I don't know if the specific disc area of the two shocks (new & old) is/was the same size because nobody checked this when fitting the new shocks. This catching action causes a plastic sounding thud when the wheel goes through an irregular (deepish) undulation in the road. I have already cut back some of the offending wheel arch plastic cover, but this still happens. Have others experienced this as well and how did they rectify the problem. NB! I actually have a similar noise on a rear shock as well. The shocks are apparently to speck for this car. Question: has anyone experienced this and found that the shock travel was maybe too long or too short?? Any assistance would be appreciated! Patrick - pat@tysonprop.co.za

Front driver side suspension knock over bumps

See if you can bounce car and replicate the noise. If you can, you should be able to find it, and put your hand on it. Stabilizer bushing are a place to look, both at the lower a arm and on the frame. If you narrow it down to the strut, it will need to be replaced. The front trans mount also goes bad, try putting it in drive with your foot on the brake and give it some gas and see if the engine moves an excessive amount.

99 camery solara...ratlingnoise front left wheel,

Strut tops are a common failure on the 97-01 era Camry/Solaras.

They will make a hollow rattle sound whenever you hit bumps or uneven pavement.

They can be replaced one at a time, and do not require strut replacement if your old struts are still in good shape.
Replacement does require a strut compressor and an alignment afterwards, placing it outside the scope of most do-it-yourselfers.

It is labeled "suspension support" in the following diagram. The bearing below it is typically replaced at the same time.

2000 Lexus ES300 - 45K miles. While driving over small bumps, the right front strut and sometimes left front strut makes a rattling noise as if something is loose. I have also heard same rattling noise...

NO YOU NEED TO REPLACE THE STRUTS MOUNTS AND THE BEARINGS UNDERNEATH IT. THE STRUTS ONCE THEY GET AGE ON THEM THE RUBBER THAT QUIETS THE BUMPS WHILE U DRIVE START BREAKING A PART. SO JUST REPLACE THE STRUT MOUNTS AND BEARINGS. NOW A WAY TO CHECK THE STRUTS R TO GO EACH SIDE WHERE THE WHEEL IS AND PUT YOUR HAND ON THE FENDER OR THE TRUNK AND PUSH UP AND DOWN REALLY HARD THEN LET GO WATCH TO SEE IF THE CAR KEEP SHAKING OR STOPS. IF IT SHAKES THAT STRUT IS BAD. IF NOT THEN U R GOOD. ALSO IT GOOD TO REPLACING 2 FRONT SEPRATE OR TWO REAR NOT ONE AT A TIME DUE TO ALIGNMENT ISSUES. GOOD LUCK

2003 Protege5 front suspension knocking noise

front stuts need replacement, buy this point it would be both. you can tell most of the time buy if you hit a pot hole on the left and it makes a nosie thats the side. but after a few days of driving like this both are in bad shape and need replacement.

there is no bearing its just the strut, you can tell buy getting a jack stand and lifting the front and moving the tire side to side and back to front. usaly anything over 10-20 thouthands of an inch is bad, and that mean if you feel it it's bad.

but anyways to replace it you will need a sop, you have to compress your front srping in order to remove and install a strut.

Noise in right front wheel or dsah board

The solution is the upper strut mounting plate. To fix it you need to take out the strut tower and take apart the strut. The faulty part is the plate that has the 3 studs that actually mount the top of the strut to the frame. You may want to also plan on replacing the strut as well, when i took mine apart, the strut piston wouldnt go back into the strut body, that means its shot. Also if one side needs this done the other probably does too. The upper strut mount is about 20 bucks only from a dealer and the strut is about 60 from any auto parts store. hope this helps
