From what I understand the switch bypasses part of the od circut to delay od function slightly in order to eliminate going in and out on hills. I have several conflicting diagrams which show a control module (sometimes). With this limited info, I'd take the cheapest way possible in making a "guess repair", by changing the switch, which may not be making good connection in one position.Other than that, you will need to find a better set of diagrams than I have before going further. In any case, from what youv'e said, I don't believe it's a trans/converter problem but an electrical one.

My 99 ranger 3.0 only one first start up ill shake and sputter give it a little gas and itll come up to normal after that starts fine just put new head gaskets and would like to figure this out thanks

When shutters and shakes do you see black or blue smoke from tailpipe until it smooths out? Black is excess fuel (leaky injectors) and blue is bad valve guide seals leaking oil into combustions chambers fouling plugs.

Rx300 with 143000 miles, overdrive won't engage all the time. Startrs out shifting into overdrive a few times then won't shift into overdrive until I shut off the engine put the car in park start it up and...

Start by checking the least expensive items:

Make sure you are not activating the O/D switch in the shift stick inadvertently.

Look at the display panel, if the "Eng" light is on, you must get the code and repair the affected item. If you have knock sensors and/or oxygen sensors malfunctions that may prevent the transmission from shifting to O/D.

Check the ground cables located in the engine compartment, especially the ones behind the air intake manifold. If they are loose or broken it affects the ECU (car computer) and causes the transmission to work erratically. If they become disconnected it may burn the ECU and shut down the car.

Now going to more profound mechanics, it could be a sticking shift solenoid valve, your RX300 transmission have five of those located were the transmission oil strainer (filter) is. It can also be an ECU malfunction and/or related to the wiring from the ECU to the transmission connectors.

Always start from the least expensive and recheck the obvious. Good luck.

Transmission hesitates going in drive. shifts fine, does not slip, full of oil. does not hesitate in reverse. 1995 mazda 626, auto. transmission, 4 cylinder, front wheel drive.

A common problem with Mazdas, it's a sign that the transmission is worn out. There is a seal on a hydraulic system that activates the clutch for Drive. When this seal wears out, it leaks and it takes longer for the clutch to engage. The only way to repair it is to take the transmission apart. You may be told to try flushing the the transmission, chances are this won't work. The seal needs to be replaced.

The transmission in my for ranger shutters when it shifts

have a friend check the tranny fluid with the truck running and in drive, with your foot on the brake, rev the engin to 1000rpm this is the only way to get a proper reading on the dip stick, if the fluid is not bright pink and smells bernt then u may have to have the tranny rebuilt, but if the fluid level and fluid are fine it could be as simple as a sensior or shifting silinoid

2000 Subaru Outback transmission problem

After a good deal of research and several shops suggesting a rebuild of the transmission, I decided to have the trans fluid and filters changed before doing anything. It was a tough call because it could have been a waste of $125. As soon as the spin off filter was removed you could see it was blocked. So the hydraulic pressure in the system was way down, still enough to engage reverse and enough to work all the shifts, but not enough to engage forward without a slight tap on the accelerator.

My Subaru has 240 000 km on it and I suppose the clutch pack rebuild wouldn't hurt, but as it is now it engages quickly and shifts up are noticeably smoother.

May not be the solution for every case, but it solved my situation.

well the low cost way to go first would be to try and change the trans fluids. If the problems still remains the it may be an internal problem

What are these buttons for? e t c drive & side of shifter

The ETC switch is a transmission control device. When it is not active, the transmissions shifts normally. When the ETC is engaged, it alters the shift points.
Example: the 1-2 upshift occurs normally between 18-20 mph. Now, say you are towing something, or are carrying a heavy load...engage the ETC, and the trans computer will "hold" the 1-2 upshift until 22-24 mph. It is just for that, prolonging the shift points, due to load.

The switch on the side of the shifter is for the Overdrive. Engaged (the OD light is off) the transmission shifts into overdrive. This saves you gas. When the button is dis-engaged (the OD OFF light is on) , the transmission does NOT shift into overdrive. It is best to leave the overdrive ON, and the ECT OFF to obtain maximum fuel mileage. I hope this has answered your question. Please feel free to comment back if you have any other questions. Thanks for chosing FixYa for assistance.
