Knowing the mileage would be helpful...Set parking brake and make sure the shifter is in neutral..The best way to troubleshoot would be remove the shifter.Cover top of trans with a rag..Ispect the end of the shifter that slides into trans.,also check the shifter for abnormal wobble...many with that problem have a worn shifter..Inspect inside top of trans for abnormal wear also....The trans could have internal damage with high mileage...Also a worn shifter could damage trans....
replacing transmission?????nonsence!!! i can tell this is an automatic trans setup, not standard. lets start here. put car in PARK and turn key on so the dash comes on. do not start car. step on the brake pedal several times slowly and listen for audible sound coming from the shifter area. you should hear clicking sound everytime yo uhit the brake. that is the shift lock solenoid releasing the mechanism indside of the shifter assembly so you can get the car out of park and into gear. you may have an issue with the shifter assembly it self. if no clicking sound is heard, it will need to be diagnosed fruther. the solenoid can not be purhcsed separatelly. shifter assembly only. start with the listening procedure and let me know.
if the shifter is moving then it is probably your trans. but if the shifter is not moving from the park possition (if it is an automatic) check to see if brake lights are coming on if not check fuse for brake lights,it also controls your shift lock.try turning key to possition before lights come on dash board and moving shifter into nuetral pos. then start car and put into gear give that a try, if it does the shift lock isn`t working.
Look for connector off neutral safety switch, or linkage needs adjustment. Try moving shifter while holding key to start, that should be a good indication if it turns over when in another gear, but be careful and make sure foot is firmly on brake.
The seals inside your transmission are bad and leaking by and they don't start to seal until the tranny fluid warms up and swells the seals. To temporarily fix this problem you can pour some brake fluid into your transmission fluid. This will swell the seal in the transmission and it should start working again. This is only a temporary fix however, eventually you will ned to replace or rebuild your tranny. I used this method on a turbo trans 350 and got a year of service out of it that way before I had to replace the tranny. Just do not put too much brake fluid into the tranny, I would recommend one or two capfuls to start with.
If this is an automatic and you mean that it starts but you can not move the shifter to get into gear. The problem could be that you are parked on a hill and need to relieve the pressure on the trans. To do this just push the car up the hill to relieve the pressure and see if it moves. If it does the problem is fixed if not you need to make sure the brake is on and to be safe have someone in the car holding the brake down. Then disconnect the shift cable at the trans and see if you can shift it at the trans. If you can the shift cable is probably bad, if not you have an internal trans problem.
have you checked your brake lights? are they working? most cars have a safety feature that require a signal from brake lights (by stepping on brake pedal) to activate a relay to disengage the shifter interlock, OR can you move the gear selector into gear, and it just won't move? is it an automatic or stick shift ? If it's an automatic start the car, after it has ran for 5 - 10 minutes check the trans fluid dipstick, it should have fluid level between add / full marks , if not add or remove fluid as necessary. If is a manual trans, it is possible the clutch is bad. need more info on vehicle, how many miles? engine size?
the linkage is just a slight bit off, it parks between gears when you shift into the slots. Disassemble the shifter from the center console, and slowly move just the cable its self between the positions and see if you have forword gears. When you find and sync the gears, then tighten the cable to the shifter so the positions match the notches in the shifter.
