I have a 2001 chevy impala my tempature gauge completely quit working 2 days ago and my gas gauge is all over the place i dont know if its full or empty.. most of the time it stays at half or a little...

It sounds like the voltage regulator for the insturment cluster is malfunctioning -- that's why you got the recommendation to replace the instrument cluster.

If it were just the temp guage failing, the problem could be a faulty temp sending unit in the engine block. However, with more than one guage failing, it sounds more like an insturment-voltage- regulator problem.

An instrument cluster would contain the voltage regulator.

It's possible that the voltage regulator cold be repaired and an entire cluster would not be needed.

More info, please let me know.

Why does the gas guage not register how much gas is in the tank of our 2001 Chevy Impala?

This could be due to a faulty fuel sensor in the fuel tank try draining the fuel tank and replacing the sensor.

My chevy 2001 has been burning alot of gas and now the gas gauge isnt working properly! It says its full when its not. then as I drive it will lower but not enough. Now it shows half full but I know it has...

Your fuel gauge sending unit is bad. Common on this model GM cars. The sending unit is in the gas tank and is part of the fuel pump assembly. Sulphur in the gasoline eats away at the contact points in the sending unit which causes it to fluctuate. Unless you are daring, this is NOT a job for a do-it-yourselfer... You may have to drop the gas tank to get at the fuel pump...Some models have an access plate in the back seat/trunk area that you can lift the fuel pump out of.
Good Luck and BE CAREFUL...... gasoline is dangerous...

sokol520--Sounds like fuel pump/fuel guage sending unit. They are integrated and located inside the fuel tank, most likely.

Cant put much gas in tank w/o it coming back out

It souds like the air return line from the fuel filler pipe is plugged. When you fill up the car the air has to escape from the tank or else the fuel backs up into the filler neck shutting off the fuel nozzle. The air pipe is housed in the fuel filler pipe and lets the air escape as the fuel is going into the tank. Remove the filler neck and inspect air bypass line to see if it is kinked or plugged.
