I have the same problem the power steering locks up if you cut it off then start it back up it works fine. This is really messed up I haven't had it but almost a year bought it used didnt get a bunch of warranties figured fairly new car didn't need them. From what I've read on this forum I'm not the only one having problems with it. I went to gm websites couldn't find a number to contact them.

chevy cobalt has a defect in the steering column had to get a brand new one put in my 2006, for years they would not aknowledge the problem they just recently fessed up, plus don't spill any drinks on the gear shift it will short out something in it and will cause the car not to shut off...my wife spilles cappucino in mine cost almost 400 dollars to replace.

Your chevy cobalt has a eletrionic power steering steer gear there is no power steering pump. there is a relay switch that if wet will short out. try to disconnect your battery for 10 min to reset to factory specs

2006 Chevy Cobalt. My power steering goes out.

It sounds like the power steering motor is overheating pre maturely. Changing the motor should take care of the problem. What really happens is the motor reports to the power steering module that it is over heating and the module is shutting power to the motor down, the motor is actually no overheating.

the 2005 chevy cobalt uses electronic power steering therefore does not require any fluids unless you want to add some lubrication to the steering column at rub points if you have any.
