I am looking for the degrees BTDC not the idle speed in rpm. Is it 5, 10, or 15? thanks

1983 nissan 280 zx car back fires when cold


Sounds like you could have an aux air regulator valve, that is not working when it will not work; there is no fast idle cold. Should be around 1500 rpm cold, the car will stall out and pop through the intake when bad. You have a digital volt meter to do some testing with to make sure the mass air flow is working correctly.

Also, c
heck the plugs for how they're burning, check the air filter for good flow, do a compression test and judge from there. Intake backfire is usually caused by running lean or improper timing.

For the 79 model zx, ignition timing was 10 degrees BTDC @ 700rpm
For 80 and up zx, non turbo - 8 degrees BTDC +- 2 degrees @ 700rpm
turbo - 20 degrees BTDC +- 3 degrees @ 700 rpm

Also done with distributor vacuum advance hose removed and plugged.
NOTE:
* BTDC = Before Top Dead Center
* + - = Plus or minus

What is the timing specs for a 1968 ford thunderbird


The timing specifications for that vehicle with all V-8 engines 302, 390, 428, 429 are the same.

Spark Plug Type: BF32

Spark Plug Gap: .034 In. - .035 In.

Ignition Point Dwell Angle: 27 Degrees

Ignition Point Gap: .021 In.

Ignition Timing: 6 Degrees Before Top Dead Center

Engine Compression: 150 Psi.

Engine Idle Speed:

302-390-428 Engines: 625 Rpm M/T or 550 Rpm A/T

390 GT Engine: 700 Rpm M/T or 550 Rpm A/T

Ignition timing specs for a 1988 volvo 760 turbo wagon ?


It is most likely going to be between 5 and 15 degrees BTDC. I would put it at 5 degrees BTDC. At idle, if the motor is extremely quiet, but the exhaust loud, move it to 10. As you advance the timing, the motor should become louder and the exhaust quieter (at idle). As you increase RPMs, the motor should get quieter and the exhaust louder. This is only true with an injector pump that has static timing (does not automatically increase with increased RPM).
If your engine has dynamic timing (automatically advances with increased RPM), then I would set the timing at 5 degrees, test run. Maybe change to 7 degrees, test run...etc. Basically, don't make dramatic changes with the injector pump timing if it is dynamic. I hope this helps.

1- check HT leads, including the main lead from the coil. pull one off at a time and see if there is any difference in engine noise, if a lead makes no difference to the engine note when you pull it off it is broken and you need a new lead for that plug - best to replace a full set since the others will be on their way out too. try each plug and check the leads like this with the engine running, 2- clean/repace distributor cap and rotor arm if it is dirty or corroded, there are 2 Clips, one on either side of the distributor cap, pull em off, take the distributor cap off, look inside the cap, there are 4 pins, are they all corroded and covered in white stuff?, they should be shiny brass, clean them up with fine wet and dry sandpaper, make them flat and shiny again. also still on the distributor is the rotor arm, pull it off, it may need a bit of wiggling - clean this up the same with the wet and dry, get a very fine grade of wet and dry sandpaper since you want the metal to be as smooth as possible afterwards, once the cap and rotor both have shiny metal clean them with mild detergent, rinse and dry them fully, not only to clean them of dirt and grime but also the metal filings from the sanding are "bad" for the distributor.. once dried refit the rotor arm (it only goes on one way, do not force it) refit the distributor cap, make sure its the right way round (make a note of its position BEFORE you remove it) 3- check if air filter is blocked and replace it if it is very dirty - if you think it is blocked try running the engine without the filter and see if it runs better, you know for sure you have a bad filter if this is the case. 4- check fuel filter (especially on 1.0 and 1.3 engines) for blockage and fuel line for blockage (replacement costs £3.50-£5 or so)
apart from that its "experience required" jobs like setting the ignition timing - just get a normal tune up after you've checked out the leads and dizzy/rotor arm which is quite cheap on an escort, you only turn the dizzy and move 1 screw...
Just for reference in case i have misjudged you're ability and you want to try tune it yourself... 1989 MK4 Ford Escort ;-D you didn't give CC so you'll get all engine data for 1989! (petrol)
NOTE: the CVH engines have hydraulic tappets so no adjustment is possible and no data is given. ---------------------------------------------

So check your spark plug gaps with feeler guages if you don't have a feeler guage they're less than a fiver at a cheap motor shop - even pound shop and market stalls sometimes have them.
Apart from that lot - these cars can run bad if the battery is weak, they chug like hell on a half charged or failing battery, so make sure the battery is strong too...
The carburettor jets could be clogged or worn... Inlet manifold could be leaking?
Check the low tension wiring (the wiring on the ignition coil, the two round plugs that puch onto the coil) one red and one green/black/stripey/somethin - trace these two wires around the engine bay and check them for damage and loose connections.
Thats all I can think of right now tell me how you get on, I KNOW these cars... I'll go step by step if you need help checking everything/replacing whats wrong,

It's trial and error. If it's a stock points style ignition start with factory settings. If it's an aftermarket electronic ignition, you'll need to know how much vacuum, mechanical or electronic advance there is. Most street engines work best with around 32 to 36 degrees total advance. So you use a timing light to set basic timing at 10 to 14 degrees BTDC, and find out how much vaccum, mechanical or electronic advance there is by 4500 RPM ( it's usually best to have all the advance in by 3600 RPM for a street or strip car). Then reset idle speed and use a stopwatch to test 0 - 60 MPH times and go with what setting gives you the fastest time without pinging. Maybe even a couple more degrees retarded for street use on pump gas ( you can always bump it up a few degrees at the track or when using octane boosters).

you only set base timing to 15 degrees BTDC (before top dead center).

Ignition Timing

    Depress the parking brake pedal, and warm the engine to the normal operating temperature.
  1. Turn off all electrical loads.
  1. Rev the engine to 2000-3000 rpm two or three times and allow the engine to return to the idle.
  1. Turn off the engine and disconnect the throttle position sensor electrical connector. (not really necessary)
  1. Start the engine and rev it to 2000-3000 rpm two or three times and allow the engine to return to the idle.
  1. Check the idle speed. The idle speed should be between 700-800 rpm in PARK (P) or NEUTRAL (N) position.
  1. NOTE: Make sure that the timing pointer is pointing to the 15° Before Top Dead Center (BTDC) mark on the crankshaft pulley. Each notch on the crankshaft pulley represents 5 degrees.
    Check the ignition timing with a timing light.

Set timing after replacing distributor


Ignition Timing

  6. If the marks are not aligned, loosen the distributor bolt and turn the distributor to make the adjustment. The ignition timing should be between 13°-17° BTDC.
