It is more than likely the starter. The brushes are becoming worn and when you try starting it there is an arch between the brushes and the armature when after a few time it will make contact on then start.

Ignition trouble shoot

Hey Ron,
AN internal combustion engine requires three (3) things to run...assuming the internals are good.
1. Adequate compression >120PSI
2. A properly timed spark
3. A proper fuel/air ratio

Start with one, and eliminate one at a time(make sure it works) - ..(this is the way a professional would trouble shoot an engine).

Hey guys just wondering if anyone knows where the fuel pump fuse not the actual relay because my gregorys handbook sais to check the fuel pump fuse before messing round with the relay

Try google images for a pic of the fuse box. The pump will only operate in crank or when the engine fires up. You wont hear it just with the key ON. This is in an accident you don't want the pump running if the engine stalls.

How do the wires go on the solenoid on a 94

Most starters have one large wire ( the same size that goes to the positive side of the starter) and another wire (which is smaller) that goes to the ignition switch and only receives power when the key is in the crank position. So if those two wires end up touching each other somehow, then that is exactly what would happen. When you connect the battery terminals the starter will engage and try to start. Originally I don't know why you replaced the solenoid, but a cracked electrical portion of the ignition switch will do the same thing. So what I am saying is if you replaced your old solenoid because it burned out, there is always that possibility that your ignition switch was faulty and burned it out. Good Luck. Hope this was a little helpful.

My '94 Econoline van's ignition is stuck on ON. I can pull the key out and still drive. The switch is loose and can be moved back and forth without key

hey, i just bought a 88 econoline off a guy who sold it to me because he couldn't shut it off- key turns-does nothing, just like yours.

the next few days it will be my project to figure it out.

one thing i learned is do not disconnect the battery while the ignition is stuck- major electrical damage can occur.

the guy i bought it from did that and i think he fried some fuses.

i will post solution when i figure it out.

also try to find a fuse and pull it out- the fuel pump fuse would be best.

join my thread on this issue at:

and let me know if and how you fixed it.

94 olds cutlass ciara

it is probably just the two smallest connectoers on the starter solenoid are crossed. one is to supply power to activate the starter, and the other supplies full 12 volt power to the ignition while starting. if crossed, the wire to the ignition will supply power to try and activate the starter.

94 pontiac grand am 4 cly.

Hey i've had this issue before. except mines a 6 cylinder.

What i did was change the ignition module that controls the output of gas and power to the engine. Then my car finally after so long started working for more than 20 minutes. :)

The problem with my car was that the chip on the ignition module was heating up. Thats why it turned off, also my sparks were damaged.

try that. If you would like instructions on how to do this check this link below:
Mines a 6cyl so it might be different for you.
