Question about 1992 Volkswagen Cabriolet

1 Answer

My 1992 Cabby is overheating the oil, it will go all the way to the end of the gauge and start making a noise that sound like if something was grinding. I stop, wait a few minute and then go again with no noise until reach the end of the gauge again. Any input? thanks

Sounds like the oil pump may be marginal... Hence you're driving along with minimal lubrication, the metal-on-metal contact getting more severe as the engine overheats. then, just before seize-o-matic, you're hearing metal-to-metal contact.

I'd have this addressed post-haste.

Well, since it is an overheating problem (too), make sure the cooling system is in good shape, too. Adequate coolant, no leaks, water pump?

Loud clacking sound on 2003 mazda 6. possible axle? happened after oil change. sounds like something is loose.

This noise can be caused by a defective outboard (wheel end) front axle constant velocity joint (known as a "CV" Joint). This would be louder on turns, more noticeable at lower speeds and sharp turns. Next it could be valve train noise, this would come from the top of the engine and this could be related to the oil change if a piece of dirt got into the oil supply to the hydraulic camshaft followers. At this point you need a professional to listen to the noise to determine the exact cause.

It does sound like one or more of your big end bearings has failed. Your valve clearances are more of a light sounding rattle, and don't usually give trouble unless the engine has become sludged. Camrys can suffer sludging if oil changes are neglected.

To get some idea what is wrong, have a mechanic remove the oil pressure sensor and insert an oil pressure gauge. You should see (when hot) about 10 psi per 1000 RPM or so. If this is down, you have bottom end bearing trouble.

Since you know where the sender is on the engine, Get a manual test gauge and put in on and see what the real pressure is before you do anything else.

Not the oil level sensor , Could also be the gauge is bad . You could try buying a used cluster at automotive salvage yard for $20 - 30 buck . Had a problem with chevy cavalier with the temp gauge showing overheating , just started the car so i know it wasn't overheating . Changed instrument cluster , the gauge work normally . You could also check the oil pressure with a pressure tester . Screws into when sensor screws into . Videos on youtube . How To Check Oil Pressure EricTheCarGuy

1984 nissan 300zx oils pressure gauge goes to

Sounds like an electrical problem, make sure the ground leads to the engine are good and the battery terminals are clean. It might just be a bad connection in the wiring harness try jiggling the connections to see if it makes the gauges jump when it is running.
