I need to replace the oil sending unit on my 2008 Pontiac G6 as it is leaking oil, but am having trouble determining the right part #. Is there an oil sending switch AND a separate oil sending unit?

there should be a sender unit with one wire attached that is connected to the oil light or gauge and there possible is a oil pressure sensor switch with 2 or more wires attached that reports to the ECM unit that shuts the motor down when the oil pressure is insufficient
take it to a service center and have it identified

The low oil pressure came up and then it said stop engine what could be the problem?

Howdy Steve. Well here are a few things I'd like you to check and do. First thing, did you have your oil changed recently, have you checked your oil level? Then my new friend look at the oil filler cap and look under it. If it looks like a malted shake under it you have a problem. Probably a blown head gasket. If this is or was the case your over temp light would have turned on. Have you had regular service done on your vehicle? Oil changes primarily. You could just have a bad oil sending unit. This would be the easiest fix. If your a little technical go to UTUBE and go into search location and removal of oil sending unit for your car. Remove positive cable on battery and disconnect and reconnect sensor connector. Reattach battery cable and restart car. Hopefully this will correct your problem. Let me know. Jim

Is the "sending unit" and a "sensor" the same thing in the Jeep Cherokee?

If you are talking about the oil sender or sensor then yes.It is rite behind the oil filter on the 4.0 liter jeep engines.

Engine oil light is on

  • First thing you want to do is not drive or run your engine for more than a few seconds to test until you get this fixed.

  • First step is to check your oil level. If the oil drops to low so will the oil pressure and set this light off.

  • If your oil level is fine then the usual cause is the oil pressure sending unit. First inspect the wiring and the connector to the oil pressure sending unit. Now to test this you have to put an oil pressure gauge in the place of the sending unit and turn the car on for a couple minutes and see if the pressure comes up. If the pressure comes up then the sensor is more than likely bad replace it. The oil sending unit is easy to remove. Pull the connector and stick a deep socket on the end and twist out.

  • If you do have oil pressure then your getting into some heavy work. Oil pump, worn engine bearing to name a couple things. At this point you should have some better than average skills and an assortment of tools.

  • Hope this helps.

you are on the right track, the first thing would be the sending unit, thats the most common reason for this type of problem, the oil sending unit is located on the top rear of the engine , heres a diagram picture to help you this is of a 6.6 engine as there are 5 engines that come in the truck but all have the oil sensor in the same location, have a good day and hope this helps.johnjohn2_77.gif

Leaking oil while running from passenger side where could it be comming from?

Oil Filter, oil pressure sensor, front crankshaft seal, oil pan gasket there are a lot of things that could leak oil. depends on how fast it is coming out, Ive seen a lot of oil pan gaskets oil pressure sensors and even some oil filters not snugged up.

No oil pressure. Oil light stayed on longer and longer after starting engine each time until it finally just stayed on. Engine has plenty of oil and new filter.

try replacing the oil sending unit,it is what tells the oil pressure,it just screws in the engine, about $15.00

Oil light when idling

Have an oil pressure test done.
One of 4 things could possibly cause that.
Bad oil pressure sending unit.
just the oil sending unit.
weak oil pump.
low oil---check oil, see if it needs any.
