Brakes fail. I have a 1998 ford windstar van and my brake pedal goes to the floor. When it happens I pump the pedal several times before it responds. My brake light stays on now. What could cause this. Thanks, Greg

You have a major brake fluid leak. The master cylinder, brake calipers, hose, steel lines or rear wheels cylinders are leaking. Not safe to drive until you repair it.

Replaced brake line from front to rear, replaced rt rear wheel cylander, bled all wheels. Pedal is firm and does not sink to the floor. When you start the engine the pedal goes to the floor and does not...

Make sure the rear brakes are adjusted and also make sure there are no leaks. if there are no leaks then you have air in the system or a bad mastercylinder, rebleed the brakes, have someone inside pumping the pedal three times every time, then start at the right rear wheel and bleed it four times, each time have them pump pedall three times and hold it down, then go to left wheel and do the same then the right front then left front. to make sure you dont run master dry top off the fluid after every wheel, then adjust the rear brakes, and after that if pedal is low replace the master but you may just have air in the system, and make sure there are no leaks on any line. hope this helps.

How to bleed the brakes on a1999 chevrolet venture van instaslled new brake pads on front tired to bleed brake pedal all the way up when van not running - goes to floor when van is running

Start with brake in the rear that is the farthest away from the master cylinder ( if your master cylinder is on drivers side start with passenger rear, pump up brake pedal until hard have someone else open bleeder valve until air or fluid squirts out, while holding brake pressure even if goes to the floor dont release pedal until bleeder valve is tightened or you will **** air back into the line,do this several times making sure you get a full stream of brake fluid and no air, continue to other rear wheel and then proceed to front wheel furthest from master cylinderand then final wheel. if you still don't have brakes change master cylinder and bleed all brakes again.

1993 Ford AWD Aerostar Van. When the engine is

Sounds like the front calipers are not fully retracting properly. Check the front caliper operation while a friend pumps the brake pedal, the rubber lines could also be cracked and allowing air into the lines. Check brake fluid level.

Only way to test brake master cylinder is to remove the metal lines attached & block off the ports on the cylinder. If your pedal is now firm , then its a bad master cylinder. To isolate a wheel problem , you could clamp off the rubber line at each wheel & see how pedal reacts. the only problem is that you could also damage the rubber hose. Master cylinder is your pedal problem.
