We added more transmission fluid and that helped with reverse, because it wouldn't even do that when the problem started. Also there was no warning of any problem prior to trying to back out of a parking space (no loud or strange sounds). The vehicle is a 3 speed AWD
1997 was the second generation Explorer
5.0 -4.9lt V8 or German 4.0 V6
No AWD until 2002
The V8 had a 4R70W
The V6 had a 5R55E
4 & 5 speeds --No 3 Spd
Think your Transmission is due fro a rebuild

the first thing i would check on any 4x4 AWD is to see if the vacume lines
were conected to the transfor case and getting vacume when engaded i have found this to be the
most commen answer

I would check the shifter and the linkage. Even though the shifter lever is moving, that doesn't mean it's moving the linkage on the transmission.

I ran into this problem, and discovered that i had a faulty front shaft speed sensor. The grinding I had was that the transfer case clutch packs were trying to lock up and engage the front wheel drive. Replacesment of the sensor has not fully rectified the situation though, as it still does it intermittently. It seems to do it at low speed turns and on acceleration. Not sure if this is your problem or not, but it could be. A scan of the computer can tell you if it is the issue though.

transmission tork converter lock has gone bad or bands are shot or the transmission is low on fluid.
