Question about 2003 GMC Sierra

1 Answer

Electrical problem I have a 2003 Sierra 4.8L, drove to work Friday with no problems but at the end of work the battery was dead. It was the original battery so I replaced it. Got in it the next morning and it started right up but when I put it in gear the rpm's go way low and the headlights dim. Runs fine at highway speed but when stopped it occurrs again. Got the alternator checked and they said it was ok, not sure what the problem is.

There are many things that can cause a dead battery. However, from your description of the problem with the odometer, I would suspect a bad switch in the door latch assembly. (most likely, the driver's door)

Does not seem that there is any electrical current. Checked all the fuses, they are fine. It doesn't seem like a battery problem as there is absolutely no current. Drove it last night everything worked. ...

Is the battery dead? Your alternator may be bad. If you drove it last night you may have driven on battery power and not realized it. You should have gotten some kind of warning message. Need to know if the battery is dead.

Battery is dead. when you putjumper cables on the cables get hot and smoke.

you have a short. try removing the charge wire from the alternator. wrap the wire end with electrical tape to prevent shorting. then try hooking up the cables again. If that works, replace the alternator. If that doesn't work, look for another short. Let me know if you have any questions.

I think you have a short in the seat motor. Doublecheck circuit breaker for electric seats. It has a reset button on it. Perhaps it has tripped. If yes, need to find short in seat.

Likely a battery problem. Batteries tend to fail when they sit for a while. If your electrical guage was reading 9 - 14, with a dead battery, the alternator was working. Also, if the alternator was dead, you'd likely have noticed dimming headlights and other electrical issues.

But, you could take the battery to AutoZone and let them check it - free.

Battery keeps going dead.

obviously there is an abnormal drain on the vehicles electrical system. Examples of this are a glove box or conso;e light staying even though you closed it, is there a reading or compartment light on ? Anybody that just says "you need a battery without ALSO testing the electrical system for integrity is not helping,
