My 2005 Durango has 46,000 miles on it ,and the steering has failed twice in the last week. Dealer thinks maybe we need a new power steering pump, fluid appears to be cooking and burning. Cost is approximately $700, also need a new ERG valve which is corroded causing check engine light to stay on...$450

SOURCE: 2008 Dodge Durango Transmission Problem

I would take it to a transmission shop and ask them to diagnose the problem but do NOT repair it yet. If the diagnostic shows something wrong, take the test results to the dealer and see if it is covered under warranty. If it is, they should reimburse you for the diagnostic as well as repair it under warranty.

Should I have a steering wheel flush at 22,000 miles for 2006 durango?

I would do it whenever you have the transmission serviced. Chrysler uses the same fluid for the trans as the powersteering system. If the transmission is do than the power steering should be as well.

unless a component has failed like a pump or rack. Than a flush will need to be done in order to keep the warranty on the new part.

What kind of power steering is in a 2000 dodge Durango? and does it have a gearbox?

Starting with the 2000 model year, Dodge Durango's had what is called rack and pinion steering. It does not have a gear box.

The Chrysler racks are leak prone as well as known for having issues. What type of problem are you having?'

What are the most commen problems in 2001 dodge durango?

the worse problem for my 01 with 180000 miles on it was. My power steering censor leaked sending fluid to my computer killing my O sensor. I think its a great SUV. I have had little problems with the car that weren't related to this. They sell a wire that can stop that from happening.

Power steering

If it does not turn PERIOD, I would say the problem is in the column or the steering linkage. If it just hard to turn, more than likely its in the boost or pump.
