No the igntion switch mounts further down the column.I has a big square connector to it then has a metal rod the hooks into the bottom of it that runs up to the lock cylinder.A gear on the end of the lock cylinder messes with another gear in the column that hooks to this rod.

SOURCE: I put the keys in ignition, but switch wont turn

Sometimes the cause of this is the steering wheel is turned to the left or right when you shut the engine off and it holds pressure against the steering lock mechanism. Try turning the steering wheel hard to the left or right while trying to turn the key and see if that solves your problem.

FIRST OF ALL, TURN OFF RADIO,DISCONNECT NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE. IF EQUIPPED WITH TILT STEERING COLUMN,REMOVE TILT LEVER.CAREFULLY REMOVE THE UPPER AND LOWER STEERING COLUMN COVERS. REMOVE THE 3 TAMPER PROOF TORX IGNITION SWITCH MOUNTING SCREWS USING SNAP ON TOOL TTXR15A2 OR EQUIVALENT. GENTLY PULL THE SWITCH AWAY FROM THE COLUMN AND REMOVE THE 2 ELECTRICAL CONNECTORS FROM THE IGNITION SWITCH. WITH THE KEY IN THE LOCK POSITION, DEPRESS THE KEY CYLINDER RETAINING PIN FLUSH WITH THE KEY CYLINDER SURFACE. ROTATE THE KEY CLOCKWISE TO THE OFF POSITION THE KEY CYLINDER SHOULD NOW BE UNSEATED. The ignition switch won't lock and can turn the switch without the key. How do I fix? This is for a 1971 Pontiac GTO

You will have to remove the steering wheel and turn signal switch and replace the ignition cylinder. After you remove the turn signal switch make sure and look in the area of the lock cylinder and make sure there are no obstructions that can cause the cylinder to no lock.Hope this helps.Good luck.

You put the key into the lock cylinder, the lock cylinder is directly attached to the ignition switch. Both are inside the plastic boot around steering column.

To program the transmitters, perform the following procedure while seated in the vehicle driver's seat:

Close all the vehicle doors.
Remove the ignition key from the ignition lock cylinder.
Press and hold unlock on the door lock switch.
Important: To successfully enter the keyless entry programming/diagnostic mode, steps 4 through 6 must be completed within 25 seconds of pressing the door unlock switch.

While holding the door lock switch in the unlock position, insert and remove the ignition key twice. Do not rotate the ignition lock cylinder.
Insert the ignition key a third time leaving the key in the ignition lock cylinder. The ignition must remain in the LOCK position for the rest of the procedure.
Release the door lock switch. The chime will sound three chimes to signal that transmitter programming/diagnostic mode is active.
Press and hold the lock and unlock buttons at the same time on the keyless entry transmitter for approximately 4 seconds. The chime will sound two times to signal that the transmitter has been programmed successfully.
To exit the transmitter programming/diagnostic mode perform either of the following:
• Turn the ignition switch to the RUN position.

• Remove the ignition key from the ignition switch
