Loosing coolant somewhere.

I have a 1997 pontiac transport and just in the last couple of days I have been noticing the power steering has not been working right away in the morning.Yesterday I noticed my van was overheating so I pulled over and got some water just to get me home. When I got home I filled the resorvoir up and the rad up.The van ran fine this morning until again it overheated.I checked the coolant level and it was almost all gone.I checked the oil and it looked a little like a milkshake but not too bad.I drained all the oil out and put new oil in.When driving it around the block I noticed a big fluctuation on the thermostat in the van.It seemed like I didnt have the same amount of power I had to really push the pedal to get it to go.Oil now looks fine but I didnt drive it alot. Can you help me.Please tell me its not the head gasket...Thx Paul

I would do a pressure test to see were the ant-freeze is going and if you have heat is may not be the head gasket it maybe you intake gaskets

It is the head gasket. you're wise to change the oil right away but stop driving it before you do some real damage to the motor.

adding anything to the motor to fix a gasket like stated by me or michigan man, will not hold long if at all.

SOURCE: Whats it sound like to you??

Have you notice any white smoke out of exhaust pipe or excessive moisture? You might notice it more under exceleration. If oil looks milkey and it don't take long for it to over heat, I'am sorry to say sounds like head gasget or worse. When its running stand in back of car by exhaust and smell if you smell any antifreeze, then you will know what it is. The thing to do is a coolent pressure test and then you will know for sure, at least what side its comming from.

Loosing coolant. can't seem to find it. reservior empty in morning... not leaking there. no apparent leaks at hoses and not smoking. there is a loss of power during drive, but not till after been...

If the engine is a 3.1 V6 it is more than likely the lower intake gasket. Those engines are well known for that problem. If no coolant is found in the engine oil, consider yourself lucky. Look for coolant at each end of the engine, i.e. behind and under the power steering pump and under the throttle body. If you find coolant there you should know, it is only going to get worse, and dumping radiator leak stop products into the cooling system will not stop it. Having this repaired will run about $150-200 if you do it, and $500-700 if repair shop does it. If not repaired the engine will not survive. Also, I have done this repair many times and its a two day affair, non-stop.

Another cause may be the reservior is cracked.

Does a 1997 grand gt 3.1 liter have rack & pinion steering? I'm told the power steering went out and I don't know if it might be the pump or what.

Your car does have rack and pinion steering. If all of the fluid leaked out somewhere and you continued to drive, you probably have 2 problems to repair:

1. What ever started leaking (return hose, rack, pressure hose, or could just be the pump itself)
2. Power steering pump was damaged from lack of lubrication (fluid)

My 1997 pontiac Grand prix power sterring is gone and hard to turn i think it might be the pump or sterring whell fluid but cant find it help me please

You might want to check the power steering fluid. The resevoir is on the passenger side toward the passenger seat it is kind of hard to find. But i have a '97 Grand Prix and i noticed that whenever i would turn sharp while going pretty fast it would make a grinding noise and i could feel my steering wheel pulling me. But the thing is the power steering never whinned or anything. So i checked it and there was absolutely none in there. So check the fluids first.

Looks like a chocalate milkshake in cooling system. no appearance of pollutants in engine oil.

Just drain and flush the coolant system real good then checkit. If you have not flushed the system for a while you may have to do it twice. other wise I think you will be fine after this id done. I hope this helps, Don't forget to rate my answer, thanks.
