Do you have access to a powered test light? If so, I can tell you how to test this problem.

you'll have to see if its missing fuel, air,or spark.Fuel could be bad fuel pump, air something clogging air filter duct, spark bad coil,or coils, crank sensor.

I have a 2000 mercury cougar that is not getting any spark. I changed the coil, crank and cam sensors. The hot wire to the coil is hot when the key is turned, but no spark is getting to the plugs.

You need to run the OBD2 Diagnostics. You will need to have someone hook up a scanner to the vehicle and retrieve the codes. This is the best place to start.

I changed my spark plugs and now my 87' mercury cougar 3.8 l will not start. My plugs seem to be down all the way

Are the plug wires on the same plugs that they came off? They need to go on the EXACT same spot that they came off. I would check that and make sure that your wires are pushed onto the plugs all the way and also on the cap and coil.(The other things that the plug wires go to).

1987 Mercury Cougar won't start

put the test light on the positive of the battery and probe the neg side of the coil while cranking and see if you get a flashing lamp if not either the ignition module is bad or the pick up inside the distributor if the car has a tach if the tach moves while cranking it is most likely the module

No spark from coil but has power to it

when you turn the key on you put juce to the coil and the points in the dist. open and shut closing the field causing spark. so i would say you need new points.
to get by you could clean them but usualy they wont last long after you clean them.
