Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Limited was created as a wholly owned subsidiary of BMW AG in 1998 after BMW licensed the rights to the Rolls-Royce brand name and logo from Rolls-Royce PLC and acquired the rights to the Spirit of Ecstasy and Rolls-Royce grill shape trademarks from Volkswagen AG.
Black smoke is usually excess fuel. The problem could be faulty fuel injectors or the fuel pressure regulator. Or a restriction in the air intake. Or a faulty O2 sensor. If you remove the spark plugs you may find the cylinder or cylinders with too much fuel. If that is the case, you would need to test the injectors and the fuel system.
the things to look at are the ignition wires and the spark plugs. If the plugs have not been changed in soemtime (i.e. 30 - 40,000 miles), it may be time to purchase and install a set of either Bosch or Champion spark plugs. gapped at .030". This is a likely scenario but if everything is in good working order, it may be the sign of a more serious problem. Let me know what you find?
Spark plugs should be checked for wear and proper gap. Coil packs on these could have leaking insulators which are the pieces that cover the plugs directly. It is possible that the electricity to ground prior to getting to the spark plugs causing a misfire. The lack of power could be caused by a plugged fuel filter or failing fuel pump inside the tank. Fuel pressure is highly critical on these engines for power, efficiency and smooth reaction times. Let me know if you need anything further, I love these cars.
it has a relay that disables spark and fuel when a sensor on the motor detects combustion gasses in the water, this system only usually cuts in after some driving but you could have a faulty relay, Rolls are good with wire colours so follow the wire colour from the fuel pump to the relays (I had the problem with a customers 1995, rolls were unhelpful so I had to do it the hard way!)
Without more input I'll give you two scenarios 1 the starter is showing signs of weakness and hen it gets hot it does not have the strength to spin the motor as it should. 2. The ignition timing needs adjusted, it may be advanced a bit and need retarding, especially with the low grades of fuel we are getting these days , you might try a higher grade of fuel or possibly an octane booster which you add when re-fueling. Hope this is useful. Let me know please. gl...dc
