It will be about 1/2 way up on either side of the box housing. It will be a large bolt of about 20 mm to 25 mm, once you locate it open and pop your little finger in to see if the oil is just below if not then top it up with specified oil for your vehicle.
Hi Val,first of all the gearboxes for all vw are made in the same factory in germany and if one model of car was giving trouble the whole range would suffer.i.e.SEAT/SKODA/AUDI/VW.I have not heard of any specific cars giving trouble.but to answer your problem, get the linkage checked by a dealer as these tend to wear and a specific tool is required to set them up properly.and while they are under the car get them to change the oil for the gearbox.you do not need to get a NEW gearbox as a reconditioned one is MUCH cheaper.if you want to down that road.(you will still need to get the linkage set up). hope this sorts it out for you.regards. geoff,England.
more likely to be a worn baulk ring.do yourself a favour and rebuild the box,its so much easier and will last longer.to test, apply slight hand pressure to gearlever in drive and over run if it slips out......its time for a rebuild....
when a vw gearbox is shot it jumps out of gear or grinds badly or even whines out loud,so if you not getting any of the above,...... yes it is a notchy box (skoda make it)
check ur engine brackets, one of them might be giving u problems (its one long shot to be honest), but most likely the synchronizer cone on that gear is causing the problem, they wear on the inside and because of simple vibration they "let go" ur gear... u need to open the gearbox and have them check, i am assuming that ur gearbox is manual... hope this helps
the polos have a recycle flap motor located on the passenger side behind the glove compartment and a temp. flap motor also located behind the glove box but more towards the center of the dash and near the bottom.one or both of these motors are probably stuck or slipping on the plastic gears.
had exactly the same problem with mine, its in my mates garage as we speak. he had to take the engine out open the gear box and check the bearings. All the bearings were worn !!!! had to buy a wole bearing kit, £170 . plus labour, lot cheaper than getting it reconditioned by specialists!!! they wanted £1000 for doing exactly what my mate has done for me. Hope this helps you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You will need to check the gear linkage hasits free movement and the gearbox mounting is secure. This happen on a Polo recently and the securing bolt to the gearbox mounting had fallen off leaving the gearbox hanging. I hope this helps you.
If the clutch feels ok and isn't biting right at the bottom or right at the top then it sounds like its time for a recon or 2nd hand gearbox to be fitted.
I recently fitted a 2nd gearbox to a seat ibiza GTi which actually has the 2.0 Golf engine fitted to it and it wasn't too bad at all, but it is adviseable to fit a clutch kit whilst the box is off.
