SOURCE: 1990 Ford Probe 2.2 automatic stalls in forward, reverse OK
Sounds like a bad IAC (idle air control valve/sensor) that controls your idle when going from throttle to idle. If bad your idle will act crazy and can cause stalls easily. Pretty sure that's it.
SOURCE: I just replaced the drive belt, idler pully and
that has nothing to do with that, make sure all is connected like the mass air flow sensor and sensor on the intake tube it under it hard to see. and also if battery was unhooked then may need to reset idle, just keep foot on gas for a few minutes if that still does not help then replace the idle air controlm valve, hope this helps.heres a diagram to help locate parts.
Testimonial: "Thank you so much, it was the air mass flow sensor!! You're awesome!!!"

The IAC valve is usually the problem with the 1.9 Escorts ,causing a very poor engine idle at a stop. It is located on the side of the throttle body .

Hi , i have a 1995 Escort with 1.9 4 cyl engine , at cold start the engine revs ok but as it get warmer it start to idle rought and die , with a scantool the o2 sensor always reed lean at idle , after checking fuel pressure , air mass meter , EGR valve , and potential vacuum leak at intake and hoses , its the PCV valve that give me that problem , as i remove the pipe with the valve there was a whissle noise comming from it , when i block the valve at its tip the whissle noise stop the engine revs smooter and the o2 reads normal , i replace the PCV and its idling good .
