Question about 1992 BMW 5 Series
91 BMW 5251 -A4S310R (THM-R1) auto trans - after engine warm up - 2nd to 3rd shift.... no engagement of 3rd (slips under load, freewheels on deceleration. Come to a stop and shut the car off and restart - then for period of time it will shift properly. Has to be electrical. Solinoid malfunction??? 2 to 3 shift valve hanging because of faulty solinoid? Oh.. when you come to a stop such as stoplight.. it is locked into 3rd like the manual setting is in operation. It will pull away from stop in 3rd. And as I said... shut down engine and restart... and at that point and it will shift perfectly for a short period of time. It resets during restart just like I had it in "manual" range prior to stopping. I am desperate to find trans manual. Can you steer me to one?? I've been a mechanic for 35 yrs. Not ABOUT to let BMW work on it. Could buy a spanking new trans for what they charge. I also need a solinoid (possibly) and cannot find just that part.
Hey tpribs1 I been a mech since 1956 ase etc &omg my 525i just started to slipping 251k in and out 2 3 &4 under pull ,i think a flush etc with some of this hi friction new fluid migh help ,its a GM trans U NO

The THM-R1 transmission is very sensitive to low trans fluid. If it is starting out in 3rd then it is going into fail safe. I would first check the fluid level and condition. The fluid level needs to be checked at appr. 30 degrees C. Also, if you just replaced the engine, did the trans come out? If so, check the harness connection at the trans, and make sure the shiftcable is adjusted correctly.I usually put gear selector in neutral and loosen the 13mm lock nut that secures the shift cable and make sure cable is adjusted properly..

My bmw did a similar thing had the shift solenoids replaced never had a problem since as for supply i am in australia so could not advise you i assume you are in the US
