Question about 2000 Hyundai Accent

1 Answer

My wife's 2002 Accent failed an emissions test with three times the NO limit. Any ideas on a solution? The garage speculates the catelytic converter, but will charge $80 for a diagnostic test.

We had the same problem with our 2000 Accent and replaced the catalytic converter. There's no guarantee that will completely solve the problem however.

Get a diagnosis first, it could be a faulty oxygen sensor, they're a lot cheaper than a catalyst! Worth shoping round for a cheaper diagnostic garage.

I just took my Hyundai 2002 Accent to get inspected. The emissions test light would not come on. Mechanic said it would have to go to the dealer to get the computer reset. Does this cost a lot?

There not exist any computer reset that correct a emission out of range. If the car is running without the check engine light comes lit ( it means if you drive the car more than 40 miles and the check engine light remains off) and the emissions are out of the range, is necessary check if the engine is operating in normal coolant temperature ( half way to the top), check if the air filter is free, check for the spark plugs are working properly, and check if the catalytic converter is at least in 13% of CO2. Also check with a scanner tool if have any engine code stored in the memory.

2002 VW Golf emission warning light was on. In garage yesterday for repair - part replaced. Light on again to day! Any ideas.

The shop failed to properly diagnose the OBD Codes
or verify the repairs

I would guess there was no road test following any work,
or any scan tool data looked at,on a road test, or driven
long enough to have all the Emission Monitors run

Should have kept it a day & done a better job

My emission light won't go out

emission light is normally related to your catelytic converter which means there is something wrong with your fuel n air mixture who services your vehicle a pvt guy or the agents

Car sometimes wont start unless you spray starter fluid, just replaced filter. oem codes are p0734 and p1401

P0734 = 4th gear incorrect ratio (that's the torque converter 'lock-up' clutch - inside the converter).
P1401 = doesn't exist for 2002 Hyundai Accent's
P1401 exists for 2000 Accent = DM-TL Air Pump Motor Curent Draw is higher or lower than expected (normal is 17-36 mA). DM-TL = Diagnostic Module for Tank Leakage & is part of the Evaporative Emissions Control System.

These two DTC's are not associated/part of the Accent's Engine Managemenet System (EMS).
Best to have a qualified/certified Hyundai Service Technician properly diagnose this starting problem with your vehicle.

This car just failed the CO portion of an emissions test. Idle limit is 1.2 & it blew a 1.38. Any ideas?

Co --- is a rich condition

Maybe an old worn out exhaust converter

Not much you can do on fuel with computer
controls

What have you done so far, hopefully before
going to inspection

1997 Nissan Pathfinder 153,000 miles service engine light on catelytic code runs great, just had new tailpipe & muffler installed. I'm told fixing this code could cost $1,000- 2,0000 is it...

If you work on your own vehicle, it would be $324.00 to $429.00 for the converter,at NAPA,if you even need one.
Unless you fail inspection for emissions, I would just have the codes read for free, write them down, look them up,then forget it, until I fail inspection a year from now.
That said,if the converter is blocked and causing you to loss power, then you replace it.
It is a bolt on item, check it out on NAPA web site.
Can not cost more than $80.00, plus part, to just bolt on. Have a relative do it in the driveway.

check both lambda sensors for breaks in wires and for open circuit on heater side of lambda sensor on the one under the car on the second cat, failed heater element will not heat gas engough for sensor to read causing false readings , also check for slow i.a.c valve on inlet manifold.

Ford Mondeo failed its MOT exhaust emisson test

The advice that the garage gave you seems right. If any bushes were worn they would show up on the MOT Test. Try taking it to another garage to check out the Cat for your peace of mind.
