4Runner Security System Problems

I have a 1997 Toyota 4Runner with a factory security system installed. It worked fine for a while but eventually started acting up and didn't want to turn off sometimes. I would also open the door sometimes and it would go off and I could never get it to turn off. Eventually it just stopped working completly. I lost the old remote and bought a new one recently. I am trying to get it working again but I'm not having much luck. A plug was not hooked up on the box under the seat but I attached it and still get nothing from the red security light or anything. Any suggestions?

How to turn on my alarm on Toyota celica 1997

There was not a factory installed alarm for this car, any "toyota" security system would have been instaled at the dealer or the regional distribution port depending on what region the car was originally sold from. Do you have a remote for the system? Also check for a red valet button on the dash that can be toggled on/off. The port systems are also known for toggle switches located on the driver kick panel or under the driver dash. If you don't have a remote and manually unlocking the car from closed driver door will not disable the system you will have to locate the toggle/valet switch.

My ignition switch is stuck in lock..I have key. I'm trying to replace it. Its on a 97 4runner sr5 please help!

You need a punch and hammer to back off the security bolts that hold the lock cylinder to the column. The heads of the bolts twist off at the factory leaving a smooth head. You have to back them out with a sharp point canter punch and a hammer.

How do you turn off security system on a 95 toyota 4runner?

Put the key in the door and then lock and unlock. If the remote is not working or if you don't have the remote, this should disable the security system.

I want to upgrade my stereo in my 1997 toyota avalon but don't know if I can bypass the security -it says that the radio will not work if it is removed. Does it mean the factory radio or any stereo I put...

The 'factory' radio has the security feature built into it.

You can add any type of aftermarket radio with no problems.

Thanks for using FixYa!

Just replaced the battery and it tripped the alarm. finally got it shut off and now it just clicks when I try to start it.

If the vehicle has a 'Factory' alarm system, try cycling the jkey in the ignition ON-OFF (not to start), 5 times. This will defeat the factory alarm. This method is used in case the remote trasmitter battery goes dead, or the transmitter is lost.

This only works on Toyota Factory security systems, however.

Do you have a "Security" light anywhere on the dash? If so, when you change the battery, this activates the security feature. Try this: Cycle the key in the ignition on-off 5 times. This will deactivate the security system (if you do indeed have the Toyota system) Hope this works for you.
