Question about 1990 Ford Escort

Tranny drop i need to change the clutch on a front wheel drive 1990 ford escort gt and i cant get the tranny out....i need help.

    You have all the bolts out and it wont come off?

Make sure all bots etc are out, drive shafts diconnected support engine remove gearbox mount lower engine enough to slide gearbox out if all bolts are out and it still will not come apart you may need to just prise the bell hosing from the rear of the engine as it could well be just stuck

I'm trying to drop the transmission out of 1985 Dodge Lancer 2.2 L 4 Cyl. Turbo to install a new clutch kit. There is a lot of connections going into the bell housing and tranny which ones do disconnect?...


my favourite job ,i love clutches like i love ,well think of something ??,anyway you will need to disconnect the clutch ,gear change mechanism ,front suspension off and drive shafts out ,reverse light connection ,now some front wheel drive vehicles you have to lower the subframe as well .iam asuming its front wheel drive as i have never seen one ,now another trick i do to save time is to just open the bell housing about 3 inches then undo one bolt on the clutch at a time and turn flywheel with a big screwdriver ,then work out where the clutch bolts are in relation to the bell housing then drill a hole that i can get my 10mm socket through and in line with the clutch bolts ,then place new clutch in position and finger tighten bolts ,then refit bellhousing with a wiggle and as the clutch is loose it can move and align up .then when i have the bellhousing in place and bolts in and tight ,i can then tighten clutch bolts one at a time by turning ringear with a screwdriver but go round twice and their you are one clutch change ,shouldnt take including teabreak more than 3 hours .

Manual clutch is out, needs replaced. Need to know tear down proceedure, front wheel drive unit and this is the first front wheel unit i have worked on


probably have to remove driveline, maybe remove awd unit, unbolt tranny, and lower it. unbolt and slide clutch plate and disc out. fairly simple task. make sure you use the alignment key that comes with the clutch :) tranny is kinda heavy so use a jack or tranni stand. need more detailed info just ask and ill look further into your specific car :)

Its a pressed on bearing. You have to remove the hub and press the old bearing off.

I am sorry, but if you are asking this question, perhaps the task is better left to a shop.

This is a complicated task, fraught with numerous issues, like clutch plate alignment, and special tools needed to support the engine, and drive shafts that need to come out.....

I also reccomend resurfacing the flywheel, and replace ALL seals in the area, engine and trans, replace pilot bearing and release bearing....

Got a car lift? Got a tranny jack? Got a clutch alignment tool? How about a good set of mechanics tools? If you've got all the above, get a Chilton's or a Haynes manual and good luck! If not, find a reputable local repair shop, bite the bullet, and pay the freight!

front wheel drive you have to drop motor and tranny, you also have to disconnect the drive axles

Fitting a clutch


thats a job one of two ways to do that pull the motor and tranny as a unit or drop the cradel i dont think there is room to seperat them in the eng bay hope this helps
