Question about 1998 Nissan Altima

1 Answer

Hi! I've owned a 95' Nissan Altima since brandnew. It's been a reliable car with 155k miles on it. But in the past 2-3 years it's developed an very irregular vibration in the engine block when in idle or in reverse. The exhaust from the tailpipe puffs irregularly. Once the car is warmed up however, it's smooth and peppy. Over time the symtoms worsen. Sometimes when I start up and put the lever in reverse, it feels like it's going to choke up. I replaced the OS2 sensor, scanned the computer, cleaned the intake manifold, plugs/wires, dist/cap over two years of time but none helped. It's particularly severe in cold weather, more so this winter than the previous years. Now when I start cold the whole car shakes really bad. It take a long time to subside. I warm up by driving slowly out of my drive way. If I don't give it some gas going downhill, it feels like I am downshifting my tranny to brake the engine. One day the temperature shot up to the 70s, my car ran a lot better and not shook as bad. Overnight the temp. dropped down to 40s and 50s, the symtoms suddenly worsen again. Is there a temperature sensor or something to look at? Please help! Thanks a lot! Oh, by the way, when I changed plugs and wires a couple months agao, I found the plug well on the far lef (facing the engine) was full of oil. Obviously I need to replace the valve cover gasket. I wonder if this is somewhat related to my problem? But it did not make a difference after I did the tune-up.

How often should i tuneup my 2004 nissan maxima

Same as on all your vehicles

The same as you have done all your life

Tune-ups went by the wayside 25 years ago

Spark plugs etc--every 3 years or 70,000 miles
Filter -every 3 years or 30,000 miles
Brake fluid every 2 years
Trans& Power Steering every 30,000 miles

Set up your own schedule from past experience

I assume you keep no log book, if have to ask

I was trying to connect an alarm and remote starter to my car a nissan altima 2006 and i broke a couple of thin bronw wires that are in the ignition and now my car do not start what can i do?

dealer only you have damaged the transponder wires ,Best advice here is throw the alarm away ,read this site as to amount of cars that develop problems after a year or so of having these weekend mechanic gizmos fitted ,nothing but problems and illegal to fit in europe ,they will not pass their annual mechanical inspection with these things fitted ,its illegal to leave a unattended vehicle running ,The vehicle has its own factory immobilisor fitted so no one can steal this vehicle unless they break into house and lift the keys ,Be it on your own head when a little down the line you are asking this question --- my car will not start and miles from home and the dealer wants 1000+dollars to get it to go -- not uncommon.Watch police stop and see how many cars are stolen whilst the owner was indoors waiting for vehicle to warm up ,window broke and its gone because once engine running the alarm is off .
