If you have an external regualtor, check that first but if volts are 11 running, I am willing to bet you have a bad diode in the alternator. Here it is: you should have between 12.5 to 13V in battery to begin with not running, Charge should increase to between 13.5 to nearly 14 when running with all accessories off. Running with all accessories on you should have no less than 12.5 and it should hold steady or possibly increase slightly. If alt has a bad diode, volts will decrease, 'till engine stalls. As I said though, you must check the regulator first especially if it's not inside the alternator. ( A weak or bad battery will "ask" for high charging rate, but will not stall vehicle)

When tested, it is likely that they "full fielded" the alternator. (this would give a 14V reading ) In my last post i may have downplayed the importance of the regulator. If the alt has 14v output, the regulator serves as a "faucet" permitting voltage to reach the battery, through the smaller of the two cables on the (+) terminal on the battery post.Check that this wire has continuity between alt and battery . If the regulator is not working , nothing reaches the battery. The engine will run 'till the power is drained from the battery, then it stalls. If you are good at this kind of thling, change the regulator. If not and the regulator is internal with the alt, change the alternator.

2002 mitsubishi eclipse alternator doesn't charge when cold replaced battery replaced alt had new alt tested checked grounds all good dose this paticular car have a alt relay?

No, cars do not have alternator relays. You say it doesn't charge but checks tested ok, and obviously that can't be true. Test it again. You put a voltmeter across the 2 batter terminals. With engine off, you should get 12.5 volts. While cranking, it should drop to 10 volts. When running, it should be over 14 volts. Cold or hot should make no difference at all, unless the belt slips or something? Why do you think it does not charge when cold? You have not told us everything.

What would cause the battery gauge on a 93 jeep grand Cherokee Laredo to bounce between 14v and 9v. this is also running the battery dead and not charging the battery back up.

Several things need to be checked before an accurate diagnosis can be made, however in general it is most likely your alternator going out OR a bad connection in your alternator/charging circuit wiring.

It's also important to test/verify that you have a good fully charged battery (with no dead cells) before any tests of the charging system. An alternator needs ample battery power into it before it can produce good charging voltage and amps out of it and back into the battery.

If you test the voltage directly out of the alternator's output post/connector (with the output wire disconnected), you will be reading direct alternator voltage output, which should be approx 13.5 to 14 volts, steady. If the voltage is at ~14 volts, then suddenly cycles down to 9 volts (or anything less than 12 volts), then you have a defective alternator.
If the alternator, while isolated, tests out at a constant 13.5 to 14 volts, then the problem is most likely a bad wire or connection in the charging circuit wiring.

There is also the possibility of the battery (how old is it?) shorting out internally, causing the voltage fluctuation. That's why I previously said you need to verify each battery cell is fully charged and good. You can usually test this with a battery hydrometer (if it's not a "sealed" maintenance free battery).

Hooked up battery backwards on my 1992 ford explorer. Got it running now the alternator isn't charging the battery. Has 12 volts power. Could it be the points on alternator where the wiring hooks into...

The battery needs 12.6 volts or more to be in service
When the engine is running you need 14 volts or more
out of the alternator to charge the battery
You can test the alt by testing across the battery term
or the alt output wire & ground to case or motor
Could be the diodes got fried & you need a new alt
Have it tested at parts store, if you can't figure it out
Check all fuses & fusible links first

I have a 1976 eldorado that when you disconnect the battery when running the car stalls out I replaced the alternator and battery and after a couple of days the battery died the alternator did not keep the...

A 76, huh, let's see, I don't know if that had the regulator in there or not. It sounds like the alt died, but maybe not. It won't run without the alt. And will only last about 20 mins on a full battery. I would take the alt off and get it back to the store to have it checked. That would be the quickest way to tell, just because it is new doesn't mean it is good. Don't keep on killing the battery, it can only handle so many drains. Hope this helps.

On 92 honda civic the battery light stays on. Is

No your alternator is not longer working correctly. It could be as simple as a broken alternator drive belt. Open the hood an see if you see any naked pulleys. If the belt is in place then you most likely with have bad alternator. NAPA and Autozone have stores that can test your old alternator. Con comeone into removing it and have it tested. If it is bad get a REBUILT one. A new one will cost a small fortune!

My 1998 isuzu will get jump started but wont hold the charge i thought after it runs for a couple of mins it should recharge it self wats wrong snl

If the battery is bad it will not hold a charge. Have your battery checked a the local parts house or your mechanic. Also have the charging and starting systems checked to insure they are working properly. Battery should have a reading of about 12.8 volts, alternator should be putting out between 13 and 14 volts. Starter should not draw to many amps.

Alternator test said good, put on car & not charging ,battery test good amp meter decrease`s

Remove and clean battery cables , replace bolts. Check for power going to the alt. it will not charge unless is has power in the connector wire. When alt is tested get them to tell you how many amps it is putting out, not volts. 12 volts will not charge a battery unless you have the correct amount of amps. I had a napa alt and had this trouble twice. The guy said it was good it had over 12 volts output, but it would not charge battery. I fixed mine with a better quality alt. from another store.

Battery light on

It is possible that the extra demand placed upon the charging system finally blew the alternator.
You need to have the charging system checked,,or check the output yourself with a volt meter (should be around 14-15 volts) test must be done with the car running.
If the voltage reads up to 14 or 15 volts then it would indicated a short in the dash control circuit.

Elec problem between alternator and battery

Rest at ease the 14 volts will not hurt your system idealy your alt will charge at around 14 to 14,5 volts at the alternator and probably have a slightly lower charge rate at your battery at around 14 to 13.5 at the battery this is completely normal
