The sppedometer gets a signal from the vehicle speed sensor in the transmission. The speedo cluster then converts that signal nd sends it to the speedo & odometer and to the enine computer. I suspect you have a bad speedo head. Does the odomter record correctly?

Buy a used speeo on Ebay for a good price. Analog (needle) or digital (numbers)?

1997 Geo Metro speedometer and odometer do not work

Let me guess, it goes up to about 30, stays there, and if you go faster (past what would be the halfway point of your speedometer) it starts dropping below 30. It sounds like the type of speedometer that uses two magnetic cores at 90 degrees to each other, and one has gone out.

Troubleshooting and repair should be similar to this: http://www.fieros.de/en/articles/speedo.html

Transmission shifting into nuetral

Check your fluid level. If the fluid level gets low, the pump basically pumps the pan dry in which the trans. valve body has no fluid to direct to keep in engaged in gear. Check your fluid level while running at operating temp. in nuetral. If this checks out ok, the trans. clutches are worn out to the point of the trans. no longer has the ability to stay engaged.
