You have to get under the car on the drivers side. There is a dipstick, but it's very short and if you do manage to reach it from the top your gonna burn yourself.

Of course have the engine warm and on a level surface when you check it.

It will be a yellow dipstick on the drivers side.

Have 1996 volvo 960, fome developing in engine oil. causing dipstick-stem to rust.suspect condensation or non-functioning crankcase ventalator as not using coolant water. ready for oil change. extesive and...

Condensation usually builds up due to short runs, you go to point a from point b and then back to point a in less than 30 min. and the oil just gets warmed, not enough to get rid of condensation.

If im not mistaken, there is a see through gauge on the transmission itself (underneath?) but very unique in no dipstick. The mechanics look at the built in gauge. check it out.

It is on the left rear area under the hood, down low, between the motor and the steering column. The transmission dipstick should be yellow plastic and has a 1/2 inch square hole in the top. Insert a long handled 1/2 inch breaker bar into the fitting in the top of the dipstick, use a two-foot long 1 inch wooden dowel to push back the spring clip holding the dipstick in place, and pull out the transmission dipstick with the breaker bar. You will need a length of 1/2 inch tubing afixed to a funnel to add tranasission fluid. I highly recommend changing the transmission oil often to protect the transmission. Be sure to pump all the old fluid out and not just drain the pan. See Brickboard.
