You cannot push back cylinder you have to wind it back using a wind back tool or if your strong enough you can use long nosed pliers to wind back piston (cylinder)

The handbrake doesn't work on my recently bought 1997 Mazda MX5. The garage (non Mazda specialist) says it needs new calapers, brake pads and discs. Is that right?

Maybe, but probably not. If all those things were messed up, you'd also have trouble with the brakes under normal driving conditions.

You don't need a Mazda mechanic to work on your brakes, but you should find another garage and at least get a second opinion.

Miata brakes are very easy to work on -- not much harder than changing a tire. If you're up for it, get a Chilton's or Haynes manual from your local library or auto parts place and dive in. It's straightforward to inspect them yourself, and even replace your own pads with simple tools.

How to replace the rear brakes for mazda 5 2007, if there is step by step procedure it will be appreciated

This should be a disc brake setup in the rear, you will need a special tool to push the piston back into the caliper, they do not push in like the old style calipers, they actually have to be turned while being pushed in. You may be able to find the tool at the local parts store. Just tell them you need the tool for the rear brake calipers for your vehicle. Hope this helps

No fluid to rear brakes on a 1992 Lincoln Continental.  Rear brakes stopped working. Pulled rear wheels and found surface rust on disks. Raised car, spun tire and push brake pedal found no friction...

check at the proportioning valve--some have a pin that sticks out from the side, when bleeding the brakes try to push that pin back in. But first check to see why this happened--fluid leak to rear wheels, brake hoses cracked and air getting into the system??????

High pitched squeal when i step on the brakes

what is wrong is that is the warning signal that it is time for a change of brake pads and an inspection of brake shoes

No rear brakes and handbrake all the way up

Whenever you change pads, you must always pump the pedal several times to get the calipers to take up any excess space between the pad and rotor. You'll fill it in the pedal as they pump up.

On the rear disk calipers, the manual calls for a special tool to twist the piston clockwise to seat it. You can use a pair of needle nose pliers carefully to do the same thing. You can't push it in directly like other calipers.
