Replacing 2003 ford focus front pads

When I took off the wheel, I found that the usual bolt holding the assembly on to the rotor had been replaced by a greased something - I can't see into the rubber well to see clearly what it is.  I have often done my own brakes on other vehicles that I've owned that had bolts holding the caliper/pad assembly on, how do I take this one off and reassemble it after I replace the pads.

All you need is 7mm allen key for the bolts holding on caliper and a decent pair of pliers for the retaing spring front pads on these cars are straight forward

you probably have a seized wheel bearing/hub assembly or frozen brake caliper - you can remove the wheel hub/bearing assembly yourself in about an hour with common hand tools (an impact wrench will really speed this up) - you can rent the wheel nut removal socket at most auto parts stores - you will have to have an automotive shop with a bearing press to remove and replace the wheel bearing ($30-$60) - if the caliper is seized - replace the entire assembly (and probably the ruined brake rotors and pads)

Left front tire locks up when weight is applied. Works when both tires are off the ground and free wheeling. Also the brake caliper seems to not release the pressure when the brakes are released.

How to replace front discs and pads


Front brakes are very simple to do:
  • Pull off the front tires.
  • Remove the brake pads by removing the slide pin bolts where the piston assembly attaches to the caliper mounting bracket. The slide pin bolts are usually a 12 or 14mm bolt. Once the piston assembly is free slide the old brake pads out.
  • Compress the piston back into the caliper by using a large pair of channel lock pliers or a c-clamp. If you don't do this, you won't be able to get the new pads on.
  • Before you put the new pads on, replace the rotor.
  • Remove the two bolts for the caliper mounting bracket. They are in the back and are bigger than the slide pin bolts. Usually a 17 or 19mm bolt.
  • Pull off the caliper mounting bracket.
  • At this point the old rotor should slide right off. If it doesn't slide right off, look for a screw in the center of the rotor, some cars will have a screw there to hold the rotor on. If there's no screw and it still won't come off, try tapping it with a hammer. If you're replacing the rotor, don't be shy.
  • Put the new rotor on. Make sure to clean off any grease with brake cleaner that may be on the braking surface from packaging.
  • Put the caliper mounting bracket back on.
  • Put the new brake pads on. Make sure to use some anti-squeal grease on the back of the pads.
  • Put the caliper assembly back on with the slide pins. Grease up the slide pins as well.
  • Put the wheels back on.
  • Make sure to pump your brakes 10 - 15 times before you drive off. Because you compressed the piston back into the caliper, the piston will not be contacting the brake pads unless you pump the brakes.

I need to replce my rotor's on an e-250 van. How do I remove them?


Place van in park and place chocks behind the rear wheels. Jack up the van and place two jack stands underneath the frame. Remove the front tires. Loosen the bolts holding the caliper assemblies and use a large flat screwdriver to pull the caliper 1/16 in. Remove the bolts holding the calipers and pads and set the assembly up out of the way. Do not put any strain on the brake lines. Take off the bearing caps. Remove the cotter pins and wheel bearing nuts. Pull the rotors off. Inspect and have them machined or replace them with new.

How do you replace the front and rear brakes in a 2003 pontiac Grand Prix


Removal & Installation Front To Remove:
  1. Inspect the fluid level in the master cylinder reservoir. Remove fluid from the reservoir until the level is lower then half way between the MAX and MIN levels.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  3. Install 2 wheel nuts to secure the rotor on the hub.
  4. Remove the bottom brake caliper pin bolt.
  5. Pivot the brake caliper body upward and secure out of the way. Do NOT disconnect the hydraulic brake flexible hose from the caliper.
  6. Compress the piston back into the bore using a C-clamp. Figure of brake assembly with caliper raised showing brake pads in mounting bracket gmpc_l4.gif

  7. Remove the inboard and outboard brake pads from the brake caliper bracket.
To Install:
  1. Install the brake pad retainers and both brake pads into the caliper bracket.
  2. Pivot the brake caliper down over the brake pads and into the brake caliper bracket. Insert the lower brake caliper pin bolt and torque bolt to 70 ft-lb. (95 Nm).
  3. Reinstall the tire and wheel assembly.
  4. Lower the vehicle.
  5. Refill the master cylinder. Pump the brake pedal several times to seat the pads against the rotor.
  6. Check the master cylinder level and add fluid as necessary.
Rear To Remove:

  2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  3. Install 2 wheel nuts to secure the rotor on the hub.
  4. Remove the upper caliper mounting bolt.
  5. Pivot the caliper down to access the pads.
  6. Remove the inboard and outboard pads from the caliper bracket.
  7. Remove the brake pad clips from the caliper bracket.
  8. Compress the piston back into the bore using a C-clamp and the old inner pad.
To Install:
  1. Install new brake clips in the caliper bracket.
  2. Install the inboard and outboard pads in the caliper bracket.
  3. Pivot the caliper up over the pads.
  4. Reinstall the upper mounting bolt and tighten to 32 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
  5. Remove the 2 wheel nuts securing the rotor.
  6. Reinstall the tire and wheel assembly.
  7. Refill the master cylinder. Pump the brake pedal several times to seat the pads against the rotor.
  8. Check the master cylinder level and add fluid as necessary.

How do i remove front pads from 89 probe?


the caliper has 2 bolts holding it in.remove the bolts.slide off the caliper and replace the pads.you need to put a lubricant on the pads,and compress the pistons in all the way with a caliper piston tool,costs about 10 dollars.,or the new pads which are much thicker will not go on.also lube the bolts,known as slider pins or they can jam up.if there is brake pulsation you need to turn the rotors.to remove the rotors ,you need to remove the bracket that the caliper bolts to.there are 2 bolts holding on the bracket.then the rotor can come off to be turned.if the rotors are not thick enough after turning,,they need to be replaced

I took the caliper off on the rear wheels and I am trying to get the rotors off. I am hitting the rotors but they are not coming off. I don't know if they are held by a bolt or just rusted on. It is a Ford...


I had the same problem with the fronts on my 2003 expedition. Assuming you took all the bolts/clips off that could be holding it then I think you have a rusted on problem that even wd40 wont help. Here is a link on how I removed my fronts 5 years ago when the truck was only a year old and the rotors were deeply scarred with the pads that ford first used back then that made the wheels get dirty from brake dust, look for orlandoguy in the postings. basically you use a circular saw with a metal cutting blade to put a weak spot the on the rotor by cutting a slot in the rotor and use a cold chisel and small 5 lb hammer to split it after, Once you crack the rotor you break the rust bond on the hub and it slides off. I wirebrushed the hubs after and used wheel bearing grease to put a thin film on that mating surface to make the next rotor replacement easier.

Replace rotors on 2003 4runner


I have never changed it on a 4runner yet, but it's all pretty much the same. Jack the car/truck up, take off the wheel. Loosen the 2 or more bolts holding the caliper to the wheel spindle (the caliper is the C shaped part holding the pads). Take off the caliper, being careful not to rip or break the brake hoses that are bolted to the caliper. DO NOT TAKE THE HOSES OFF! it seems tempting to save time and be sure not to break them, but if you take them off the calipers you will need to bleed the air out of the system, which usually takes a bit of time. Just rest the caliper on the suspension table or any place where it won't fall too easily and where it wont put the hoses in danger. Now with the caliper off, both the pads and the disc should be free to move and remove. On some models the pads are hooked directly to the caliper, and some others like the ones on my toyota echo are in a holder the bolts back on to the caliper. The disc is usually just resting on the wheel studs and should be able to be removed without doing anything to it. In some rare cases, there will be one bolt holding it back, but its just there for centering purposes and is not necessary. So just put the new disc back on, put the pads back on the caliper or in the holder depending on the model, then bolt the caliper assembly back into place and put the wheel back on. And your done, you just need to put the car down and take the jack out.

Remove the wheels. Remove the two retaining bolts that hold the pads in place. Slide the pads off the rotors by lifting up and outward on the bracket from the bottom. Sometimes they can be a little stubborn. The reason for this is usually there is a slight ridge on the outer edge of the rotor that they need to slide over because the rotor needs to be turned now.

If they are sealed bearings, you will need a press to get them out. If they are bolt in, just remove the brake pads/rotors, then the axle nut, then the bolts holding the wheel bearing in. Install in reverse order.
