I have an 02 firebird 3.8 V6. The temp gauge stopped working. I replaced the temp sensor and it still doesn't work. What could be the problem?

Either coolant level, fuse or a problem with the cable connecting the sensor to the gauge...?

It also has smart gauges and if the gauge reading and the temp reading are not the same it turns off the gauge, which is the thermostat, I have had to change out the thermostat twice because of it and then have the gauges reset by my mechanic's code reader.

IF YOU CHANGED THE FLUID AND THEN THE SENSOR FAILED IT IS BECAUSE THERE IS AIR IN THE RUBBER PIPING TO THE TOP OF THE ENGINE MANIFOLD. THERE IS A BLEEDE VALVE TO RELIEVE TRAPPED AIR AND ONCE THAT IS GONE THE GAUGE WILL RESPOND. YOU HAVE AN AIR BLOCK AND THE SENSOR NEED TO BE IN THE ANITFREEZE SOLUTION TO FUNCTION.

Sounds like a temp sensor or wiring problem.
You may only have one sensor for both the gauge and the engine computer.
If the computer temp sensor fails, or is not sending a signal to the engine computer, the fans will run as a precaution to keep the engine from overheating.
If you have replaced the correct sensor, it could be a wiring problem, or the engine coolant could be low enough to not touch the sensor.
If the coolant sensor is not sending a signal, the check engine light should also be on.

The original temp sensor was broken So I replaced it twice and it stillisnt working

Have you verified thet the temp gauge works? If not and you have a single wire going to the temp. guage sensor, you can ground the wire coming out of the temp gauge sensor, cut the ignition on, and verify the gauge peggs hot. If this doesn't happen, verify the integrity of the wire. If the wire is good, replace the gauge.

Hello insta5,

There are two temp sensors, one is for the ECM and the other is for the instrument panel gauge.

The one located just under the thermostat goose neck is the one for the gauge. See picture below.

I had to replace a new rebuilt in my 92 firebird. We replaced all the sensors but now my temp.gauge isn't working on the dash..It was working before..any idea what to do next to get it to work/

Unplug the temp sensor and see if the guage changes, then ground the wire going to guage at the sensor and see if guage pegs out. You may have the wrong sending unit, the one for a guage is different then the one for a light.

When my engine ran real hot and temp gauge stops working

the sensor may of been damaged. You will need to check it for ohms, If you have 0 its shorted and would cause this issue. If at a few thousand then you may have a damaged gauge.

Definitely check your fluid level in your radiator. Top it off all the way. I've seen that happen multiple times on cars that were low on anti-freeze. If that doesn't work try replacing your thermostat. It's cheap and the easiest place to start if topping off the fluid doesn't get you fixed up.
