Question about 1993 Mazda Protege

My 2000 beetle 2.0 has constant engine oil in the reservoir.

Recently I replaced the oil cooler right above the oil filter, as per mechanic, but still have oil in my radiator reservoir, Checked oil constantly and there is no water in my oil, also transmission has been serviced recently, ok too.
and radiator was replaced a couple months ago. I though it was the block or the head, but again I have no water in my oil , dip stick looks great !Anybody have any suggestions, I have flushed the system several times, but no change , always there is oil in the top of the reservoir floting. any one !
I have an old mazda, same problem. It was overheating badly too. First I replaced the head gasket, I think that was a waste. Later I found that oil is definitely coming out of my oil cooler (between the filter and block). I bypassed the water lines to it and it had oil coming out of the water ports. I am now trying to get all the oil out of the radiator / engine / heater core. There is so much oil in the water, I'll probably have to take it somewhere to have it flushed.

Ive seen this problem on a few cheys
turn out it was a cracked head on one and two others the intake gasket was bad

Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
  2. Drain the engine oil and remove the oil filter housing.

  2. Lower the vehicle.
  3. Remove the intake plenum.
  4. Remove the intake manifold.

    • The engine coolant temperature sensor (4)

  2. Remove the water crossover upper and lower seals (2).

  1. Loosen the upper heat shield bolts on the left side of the exhaust manifold.

  2. Remove the oil cooler inlet line from the engine oil cooler.

  1. Position the oil feed and return,lines out of the way and secure with mechanic wire.
  2. Remove the engine oil cooler, inlet and outlet nuts (1).
  3. Remove the engine oil cooler cover bolts (2).

  3. Clean all sealing surfaces.

  2. Apply a 2 mm (0.08 inch) bead of RTV silicone sealant, GM P/N 12346240, in the groove around the engine oil cooler cover.
  3. Install the engine oil cooler cover.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

  1. Install the engine oil cooler cover bolts (2). Tighten the engine oil cooler cover bolts to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.).

  3. Reposition the oil feed and return lines.

Massive oil leak suddenly on 2000 vw beetle looks as though came above oil filter and awhinning pumpsound present


That's the oil filter cooler seal. My car did the same thing; poured a quart of oil out on the ground in about a minute while I was looking for the source of the leak.

There's a box with radiator fluid going through it mounted between the oil filter and the block to cool the oil. It's got a large o-ring to seal it, and when that seal goes, it just *pours* oil out. Take the oil filter off and you'll see a large nut. take off the nut and the cooler will slide off - you can do that without removing the fluid lines.

The seal is between the block and the cooler and will be very obvious when it's bad; mine was missing a big chunk out of one side. Popped a new seal in, put it back together and haven't had a problem with it since.

If no external leak and the transmission fluid colour looks white, the problem belongs to the automatic gearbox oil cooler. The oil cooler has broke mixing the gearbox oil and coolant causing this milkshake. It's a small radiator core type oil / water heat exchanger. It is cracked inside and transmission oil is mixed with engine coolant. Because the transmission oil pressure is greater than engine coolant pressure, the transmission fluid level drops. See also the coolant colour inside recovery coolant reservoir inder bonnet! It could be like this:

when you remove the plastic cover from the bottom covering the engine, look to the passenger side. find the lower radiator hose. just above that hose will be your oil filter. hope thishelps

Transmission fluid level need regular top up and there is no external leak.Fluid color looks white.

Looks like the oil is leaking out right above the


oil filter screws onto an adapter housing which also has the pressure sending unit on it (above oil filter). This adapter housing bolts to the block with 3 bolts. if oil appears to be leaking from where the adapter housing meets the block (especially at the rear side of engine near bottom), then you need to replace the siamese o-rings between the adapter housing and the block ($12 part at dealer). remove lowest 12mm bolt and loosen top 2 12 mm bolts(top 2 bolts won't come out unless you drop the engine down, but loosening 1 inch is all you need), replace o-rings and retighten bolts. be careful not to get dirt/grit between block and adapter. just finished doing this to son's 95 2.7 v6 which was leaving an 8" puddle of oil after idling for only 1 minute-worked perfect

The passenger right side of the car doesn't have any flanges for cooling system, if that's correct then your radiator has a leak or puncture.

The driver side of vehicle has both the in and out flanges for the radiator. Very common to see leak at the drain valve leaking (not closed tightly). In the same area would be bottom flange of radiator which the composite flange is degrading and causing the leak.

The middle part of the bottom engine compartment is where your oil/coolant cooler assembly just above the oil filter. A loose oil filter could be the cause 95% of the time and 5% would be a bad o-ring from the oil cooler to the oil filter flange.

OIL LEAK COMING CLOSE TO THE OIL FILTER


if you had recently done or had an oil change done sometimes the gasket from the old oil filter sticks to the block. when you install the new oil filter it ends up with 2 gaskets and leaks around the base where filter meets oil cooler. another posability is the oil pressure sending unit is mounted just above the filter.

Most probably you have bad head gasket. That is the main reason for oil getting to coolant.
Check you exhaust for color. White color can be also idiction that coolant going to combustion chamber.

Over heating and oil mixing


yes sounds good to me also check the oil cooler which is what the oil filter screws onto with water pipes connected as well,as normally the auto connection into the radiator doesnt give problems when its copper but a lot of new cars use plastic and they are absolutly useless.this oil cooler on top of the oil filter is often damaged by heavy handed mechanics hammering a screwdriver into the oil filter to remove it and make a hole into the oil cooler .
