Question about 1990 Ford F250

2 Answers

Transmission swapp I have a 1990 F250 4X4 7.5l that has a bad E4OD transmission. I found a 1992 F150 4X4 5.0-5.8l E4OD are they swappable or is there a difference because of the computer?

I called a ford dealer before I posted the question and they told me it would but my problem was the computer difference was my problem. I know from Dodge that there is a difference between small block and big block transmission bell housing. This is my first ford. Thanks for the information.

The difference that you're going to find is that the bellhousings are different. The trans out of the 5.0L will not bolt to the back of the 7.5L engine that you have.

Trust me, there is a difference on the bolt patterns of the big and small block. I build Ford racing engines for people and work on alot of Ford products. Unless the dealer is expecting that you'll swap the bell housings from one to the other. Then it'll work. As for the trans. computer, check to see if you have the same plugs on the transmissions. If they're the same, you'll be fine.

It seems as though he has made an adjustment on the bands. I would recommend that you take it to someone who knows how to work on a transmission. If you don't then you are goning to soon be buying another one. The e4od is a good transmission, but it can only take so much before it gives.

Rebuilding an automatic transmission requires more than looking at a diagram. Check out faxonautoliterature. They have the original Ford service manual for your truck and it will have all the information that you will need to rebuild your trans properly. Hope this helps.
