Rumbling Noise in Reverse

Whenever I start my car, typically in the mornings, and I go to put it into reverse, it makes a rumbling noise (on the outside of my car, according to my dad, but to me, it sounds like something grinding on the inside). He says it sounds like it is coming from the passenger side, but I hear it more on the driver's side. I have a 2002 Dodge Stratus SE with a 2.7 engine. My transmission does not feel the best, in drive. It tends to shift hard, in drive. I don't know if this has something to do with my noise problem.

We did figure out that my car does do it when in Reverse and Drive, but not Neutral or Park. And it only does this when you first start it everyday, but after it warms up, it stops.

SOURCE: Grinding noise when backing up Jeep Liberty'06 only in the AM..

Have your rear brakes checked. It might be a brake wear indicator. Or your rear brakes are stuck on the brake drum.

SOURCE: My 2002 Dodge Neon makes a loud, almost grinding

I'd say there's no grease left in the CV joint boots, if it's front wheel drive. Something you should check right away, as your car has about reached that age, and if you run it without grease in the boots, you'll eat up the joints in a big hurry, and that's costly and dangerous as well.

SOURCE: Screeching noise coming from driver side tire

The high pitch sound may come from the brake pads as metal parts hit the disc to signal the owner that it needs change. The metal parts gets exposed when the pads have worn out. The brake also has a hub to cover the disc. See if the metal plate is hitting it but this issue would appear when the wheels are in motion. Check if it is the belts, have the tension checked out. Other than that the bearings are the other items on your wheel that could cause a high pitched sound when you car is in motion.

The water pump bearings could be going out and they will make a grinding noise. The water pump doesn't always leak when the bearings are going out.

What might be experienced by transaxil/transmission bearings wear? Rumbling or vibrations?

Kia is bad with wheel bearings ;.About 80 to 100k they start going bad. You have to check them physically with a dial gauge or know how to inspect them in other manners. They cause a rumbling sound when they start to go bad.

Rumbling noise

This problem may be attributed to the tire rubber being hard on a cold morning and softens as the heat in the tires warm the rubber allowing them to be pliable on the road. The hard rubber generates the noise that is transferred through the hard rubber mounts and will do so until all the rubbers heat a little.

Rumbling noise under neath car

I am at a loss knowing what gear box your referring to and if the rumbling noise began before or after changing the box. There are many things that could simply be loose underneath a vehicle. A wheel bearing can definitely make a rumbling noise. Sure you changed the right one. Can be hard to tell which one sometimes. Sorry I couldn't help more than I did.

Have a rumbling noise in left rear wheel while driving down the road 1999LexusRX all wheel drive.sounds like a wheel bearing.

Have the car put on a rack and have the noise listened to with a mechanics stethoscope to confirm the wheel bearing is at fault.

2001 toyota corolla makes rumbling sound when i start it, and when i reverse. It stops when i start driving

Thinking a motor mount, try this .Open the hood, then start it ,you should be able to see the engine from the drivers seat,at least a little.Put in reverse and then drive ,if the engine rocks more one way then the other it needs a mount changed. The mounts let the motor move maybe 1/2 an inch,if it moves much more things start to make contact, like the exhaust pipe and the body, making a rumble.
