1995 Dodge Neon Sitting for a Year and wont start

Hi,
I just bought a 1995 Dodge Neon. It was in running condition 1 year ago when it was put in storage (where it sat for a year). Over that time they did go to start the car about once a month, and finally it wouldn't start.
It is turning over, but not all the way. The engine does sound good when it is starting.
I had a really nice mechanic come look at it briefly and he said:
* the new spark plugs are not giving a spark
* the locked gas cap had been pried off so there was no vacuum seal
* there is no smell of gas when we press on the gas to try and get it to start
* we put gas right into the carb but it still refused to start.
Any suggestions?

Hi, with a booster pack on the battery works just fine, and in the on position (vs start) all the lights, air/heat and wipers work just fine. I did not see an engine light come on.

I dont believe it is the starter or the alternator.

There is a half tank of gas in the vehicle, but it is probably stale at this point. We did put fresh gas right into the carb... that didnt help.

I did replace the gas cap today, but I will happily have them look into the coil pack. THANK YOU

ok, the mechanic ran a diagnostic and came back saying it was the Electronic Control Module... does that make sense?

Did you cycle key on,off,on,off,on. then wait to see if flashes? By the way, it's probably a 2.0L fuel injected engine that you have, just for future reference. Should say on sticker under hood.

First, make sure battery has good charge. Next, Can you cycle key to on, (not start) off, on, off on, and then leave it on & see if the check engine light starts to flash. Let us know from there.

perhaps it's out of gas so fill the tank.... replace the gas cap and you will need to find out why there is no spark... i would start with the coil pack

Your ECM is located on drivers fender up near battery . Remove battery cable first, then remove the ECM & all the connectors attached to it. Get some electrical contact spray & clean both ECM connector pins on it, and the connector itself, down in mating females. Re-install after cleaning, & remove it again a couple of times & re-install, just to help clean up the contacts. Then lets see what you get. While your under the hood, look real close at all the wiring harnesses for signs of mice chewing through anywhere. Hook your battery back up & see if you hear fuel pump "hum" for a few seconds with key just to on position.

Gas into the carb doesn't work all that well.... hard to regulate it for one thing.

is that a mechanic you trust .... that part is $600 u.s. approx. i'm not saying it doesn't need replacement but if you can get a second opinion from a mechanic you can trust that would be a good idea. i can't remember where it would be located on that vehicle but if you can find it ... remove the connector and reconnect it... the connections could just be corroded over time.

Hi Cherles, I'm glad to help!

I'm not there to diagnose it properly but here's a couple thing you can try! (1) When a vehicle sits for a long period of time the gas can go bad. I would make sure the gas is not full of moisture from sitting so long. (2) OH the old years when they had points. I would take the point out and see if they are burnt if they are replace them. Start here and see if this helps. Hope this helps and have an awesome day Cherles.

Ok, even if the battery is new, get a voltmeter and measure the battery, if its below 12v, thats the problem. That way you completely eliminate all these factors without a doubt. Also check negative wire from battery to the ground box and connections. It sounds more like a corroded terminal.

2004 dodge neon and white smoke

You probably have a bad head gasket.
To verify this see if the coolant is milky or if there is oil in the coolant reservoir. If so you need a new head gasket . If not you have an oil leak into the combustion chamber.

Approx cost for head gasket w/head cut approx $1500 to$ 2000.

If it turns out to be an oil leak into combustion chamber I really can't project . Need to know whats leaking and why.
Good luck

Wont start

turn the ignition to the ON position and check to see if you can hear the fuel pump making a buzzing sound. if it doesnt make a buzzing sound, the the fuel pump isnt working. if the fuel pump sint working, then check the fuse in the fuse box under the hood.
