Question about 2004 Toyota Solara

1 Answer

What is the towing capacity of a 2004 Solara?

I want to tow a small sail boat with my 2004 Solara convertable. Total weight on the trailer is 700 lbs. I'm also considering one with a total trailer weight of 1,300. I put a receiver hitch on the car to carry mountain bikes.
Thanks for your help with this.

Not trying to sound like dodging the question but, If it's not written in your owners manual, your best bet is to call local toyota dealer & ask to be sure. Wouldn't want to guess on that & end up blowing your transmission or engine.

My son has an 04 Solara (not convertible) and the owners manual says that this vehicle is not recommended for towing anything. With a 3,000 lb vehicle, I wouldn't recommend towing any more than the 700 lb.

not enough information
to tow anything , there are regulated engine power requirements , braking capacity, electric break away brakes on the trailer, weight on the tow bar, boat width, boat length
All the requirement can be found at the vehicle registry office or main roads department

Towing capacity

Depends what you are towing.

If it is a rolling load a relatively small and low-powered vehicle can tow several tons with little difficulty on a level metaled surface.

For trailers and caravans the towing capability must be married with the noseweight capacity.

Then there is local legislation to consider. Here the towing capability of vehicles make little sense as there are age and fairly severe weight restrictions unless additional medical and licencing conditions are complied with.

It isn't a good idea to tow more than two-thirds of the weight of the towing vehicle...

Vehicle towing capacity chart

A) Depends on the hitch you have and what it is rated for. Most car hitches (non truck or SUV) have a tounge weight rating of 500 LBS. This is the weight that is put on the actual connection of car and trailer. B) To not kill your transmission, do not exceed a total trailer weight of more than 1/2 the vehicles curb weight. (Dry weight of car full of fuel) Car transmissions and frames were not originally designed for towing, and exceeding 1500 LBS total trailer weight is considered dangerous (can get trailer weave and sway easily) and will cause excessive strain on drive train components. U-Haul has an online guide that will basically tell what type of trailer you can haul and its maximum allowed weight.

Towing capacity for y plate Citroen Picasso 1.6 petrol

Rule of thumb for small cars is maximum 500 LBS. tounge weight (on the trailer hitch ball or receiver) with a total trailer weight not exceeding one half total vehicle weight without fuel.

A Toyota Tundra can pull the space shuttle but stopping on a down grade is a different story. Towing capacities are base upon stability and pulling and stopping but should never exceed the cars weight. unless electric trailer brakes are used . but again if trailer would jack knife it will push your car into a tree without stopping because weight has overtaken control.
